“Traditional Japanese with heritage”
We booked in advance and so glad we did. Others got turned away. The ambiance is great as it looks like an old fashion Edo period restaurant. While there is an English menu, most servers do not speak English. There is a wide variety of food from sushi sashimi, Shabu shabu, soba, udon, tempura an...d a wide variety of sake. Overall a wonderful venue with good food. Only a few minutes away from Nagano station. Well worth a visit.

“A great option for those holidaying in Japan”
We live in Nagano and thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Shinshu Nagaya Sakaba. We would definitely go back and plan to take any friends/family who visit from now on. The restaurant is designed to mimic a traditional Japanese atmosphere and though an imitation, it does so very well and provides excellen...t service and good food. From memory the menu was in Japanese but with enough pictures to assist non-Japanese speakers and friendly, helpful staff to make your visit really enjoyable. So if you're visiting Nagano and looking for a really enjoyable evening nearby the station, we recommend Shinshu.

“Best food in Nagano”
This is the coolest traditional restaurant with the most delicious food. I went with locals who ordered local favourites so I was probably spoilt by all the great food I got to try.

“After looking forward to going, I was disappointed ”
We really wanted to go after reading the positive reviews. First we rocked up but were told the restaurant was full so we asked the guy if he could reserve a table for the next day. The next day when we got there, the waiter gave us an iPad to order on. He said that’s where the English menu was. So... we ordered on the iPad. There wasn’t much choice and we kept seeing people eating food we couldn’t see on the menu! It turns out the Japanese menu had a lot more on it but we only found out after eating. Also the “iPad English menu “ only had the expensive dishes. We got very disappointed. So if you decide to go, don’t forget to reserve and order from the Japanese menu, ditch je iPad and get the waiter to sit down with you to answer any questions you have about the Japanese menu.

“Great for vegetarians too”
We decided to try this restaurant after reading the positive reviews and we were not disappointed. Yes, it was tricky to figure out how to get in, and we had to wait 15 minutes for our reserved table, but we just soaked in the unique atmosphere and architecture during that time. When it came to o...rdering food, it helped a lot that our son speaks some Japanese. He was able to ask our charming and helpful server for vegetarian suggestions. I ended with too much food! The mushrooms in a mild lemon sauce were delectable, the tofu appetizer a delight of flavors with the softest tofu. A local fried potato dish, served with very fresh mustard sauce was another favorite. The vergetable tempura was difffernet from the tempura back in California- it seemed to be made of mixed greens and spring onions; I had one too many of those! And then of course, there were tender soba noodles served with a delicates sweet and savory broth. Such a feast! I highly recommend this restaurant. Bring Google translate or someone who speaks a little Japanese. You won’t be disappointed!
