This casual restaurant does not tequire so-called 'eating manner' nor formal clothes although it has a long history back into 1600s. The restaurant thach-roofed building became a motif of UKIYOE by Hiroshige in the 19th century. There are traditional Japanese entertainment story telling in every 3 ...months. Prices range from 1,000 yen to 3,000 at most.Booking is not needed.

Chojiya has been serving the local stew on rice using 'yam' for more than 400 years in Shizuoka. The resturant thatch roof building itself has historical value, which is drawin in traditional wood-block paintings by HIROSHIGE in EDO period (1832). Although it is one of the famous traditional r...estaurants, you can go there in casual clothes. You can eat either sitting on tatami mats or chair. Dishes are mainly made from yam and some kinds of local Japanese rice wine (SAKE) are available. Prices range from ¥1,500 (set menu) to ¥5,000 (for couple). One dish in a plate costs around ¥500 to ¥1,000. Prices are reasonable. The owner of this restaurant is pleased to do something Japanese very often. Besides offering usual dishes, he invites some professional story tellers and hold a show every three month or presents many traditional events such as monkey inside or outside the restaurant. So, you can enjoy those amusements while eating. Inside the restaurant, there is a exhibition section showing the history of the restaurant and tools they used to use in the restaurant. This place is worth visiting for those who are interested in Japanese cuisine, culture and history.

“The restaurant among nature”

The old and traditional restaurant in Shizuoka over 400 years. I ordered recommended set menu “Tororo-jiru” come with rice, yam soup, miso and pickled vegetable (so delicious). Enjoy the scenery while having the traditional meal is really good for city escape. The price is not expensive and the quant...ity of food is so much beyond my expectation. I ride the bus at front of JR Shizuoka station platform no. 7 with bus number 84 stop at Marikobashi Iriguchi / The IC card is acceptable and more convenient than using bank note due to there is no changes.

it wrote that Chojiya have around 400 years history, yea it looks like to be, very traditional display and food, just like to take you back to the year 1500s. but please note that the food is not like modern japanese food, if you want seafood or grilled something, then choose the other one.
