“Racist against non-Japanese.”
Racist against non-Japanese. Rude Guy at the front told us they didn’t have an English menu and told us we shouldn’t come in even though we were willing. Do not recommend!!

“Don't waste your time if not fluent in Japanese”
We were recommended this place by our guide as authentic local cuisine. Took a cab ride from our hotel that was 1,700 yen. Turned away at the door because our Japanese was not up to their standards. We tried to explain that we understood enough and had the experience and adventurousness to wing it... but they kept smiling and saying no. There were tables open and it was not late. Really could not understand this incident in any way other than in the context of ugly xenophobic preconception.

“Good local cuisine.”
I went to here for dinner. There are abundantly good menu in that restaurant. My most favorite is Sashimi by local fishes. It was so delicious but much cheaper than Tokyo's counterpart.

“Be Not Afraid”
I read with surprise the 2 reviews from people who were turned away for lack of proficiency in Japanese! They were clearly a little nervous at the door, but it was rainy and we were wet and hungry and felt very welcomed. To our knowledge, there is no English menu, but there are pictures... and we do... know some fish names, but that's where it ends. We had several sashimi assortments (buri, amaebi, otoro, saba, maguro, sawara) that were as good as almost any I have ever tasted (we are fans of high-end sushi, and had eaten at Otomezushi nearby the night before). There were a number of items that we were told were out of season, but were more likely just out of stock- our waiter did her best to communicate and was very apologetic for her 'small English', but it was quite an improvement on my non-Japanese. We also had some very decent vegetable tempura, a basket of small fried prawns, and a whole fried nodoguro- oh my! The chef came out and was very solicitous and gave us a dish of dried fish in Kyoto miso (I think) that was very tasty and new to us. We also had some ika (squid) sashimi that came with a raw quail egg, sliced scallions and grated ginger. Not sure what we should do with it, but we mixed it all together and it was delicious. Strangest dish of the night was a bowl of a sort of gravy with sliced pork, shiitake mushroom, bamboo shoot and several colors and shapes of a starchy substance. I think this is a local specialty, but while it was warm and filling, I can live without it... There's a photo on the website. Lots of sake available and a number of shochus, but if you can't read, just take a guess- we asked for dry sake and got a perfectly drinkable version. Prices were reasonable. And again, the fish was excellent. Do not ask for sushi- this is not a rice restaurant! But DO eat lots of sashimi!! Last note: the website is a bit more shiny new than the restaurant aooears to be, and the presentations clearly dressed up, but do not let this deter you- the quality is there.
