“Best Kaiseki in Yamagata!!”

Reviewed 03/Apr/2019

Best way to experience a great kaiseki meal in a most tradition setting. The restaurant was a very traditional garden house; and we were seated in a private room overseeing a beautiful garden with a pond. The lady chef and owner was wonderful; she came and greeted us upon arrival, explained our cour...se, and sent us out. Her couse was beautifully presented, and used best of local ingredients. A must while in Yamagata!!

“High-class Japanese food in a lovely setting”

This restaurant (the correct name is Ryotei Kishokaku) is on the grounds of Gokoku Shrine. Each room of the restaurant has a view of a lovely pond and garden, which are lit after dark. The decorations in the restaurant were tasteful. We ate in a room in which the sliding doors were painted with a be...autiful scene of irises in bloom. The specialty is kaiseki cuisine (here, “kaiseki fusion”), the formal Japanese cuisine in which the diner receives many small and beautiful dishes, each with its own flavor. Japanese sake suits this kind of food. This restaurant has an extensive menu of sake made in Yamagata. Everything we ate was elegant and delicious. If you’ve never had kaiseki cuisine, you will be thrilled. But if you have had a lot of kaiseki, as I have, then you may join me in thinking that while it was lovely and delicious, it was a rather standard menu, with no surprises, resembling an expensive meal in a Tokyo hotel. It seemed to me that the dishes were designed to be pretty and costly, but showed little imagination. However, this place is great for a relaxing evening in good company. The wait staff were outstanding. To get there, take a taxi from the JR Yamagata Shinkansen’s Yamagata Station East Exit, or from the JR Yamagata Shinkansen’s Kita (North) Yamagata Station East Exit. It will take 5-10 minutes from the station to the restaurant. For reservations, telephone: 023-631-3644 (in Japanese) You can make reservations in English through their web site.
