“Quite a bit of history to it!”
Located in old Yokohama-Shi in a building that has been around for more than 150 years. Parts of the restaurant were destroyed during war, but original wood carving and work has survived for more than 150 years. Very hospitable and knowledgeable English speaking staff. Tried the kaiseki meal. Each c...ourse was prepared with great care and presented well. Very good courses comprising of wagyu beef, grouper, pork, miso, tofu and selection of delicious desserts!

“Most enjoyable. Highly recommendable!”
A Japanese friend took me to this restaurant as a birthday present, knowing that I am interested in art history. We accessed this restaurant by cab. Tanaka-ya was built in 1863; its restaurant was owned and managed by the wife of a retainer (samurai). The current mistress is a fifth-generation desc...endant; she introduces herself and the history of Tanaka-ya to each diner, afterwards, she plays the samisen at the entrance hall (genkan). Such introduction, in words and photographs, in private dining rooms (even for two people) with a dedicated server assigned, make the dining experience at Tanaka-ya extra-special. The (exquisite) nine-course meal for dinner, with drinks, will set you back about 200usd per person; however, I believe that your will find this dining experience quite unforgettable. By the way, there are less expensive course meals too:) Have recommended this to friends, and will absolutely return with my family.

“A MUST for foreigner's looking for a little history.”
Yokohama is not the city in Japan that comes to mind for a traditional Japanese meal, but before heading back to the states I decided to give Tanakaya a try. Overall it was an amazing experience that became the highlight of my trip that included 3 different cities. Tanakaya's hostess is descended o...f 6 generations of previous owners. Not only did she greet us at the entrance playing a traditional instrument (don't show up late for a reservation), she later came by and gave us a 10 minute presentation on the history of Yokohama bay and her establishment. My GF who herself had grown up in Yokohama was equally amazed at the collection of historic photographs of Yokohama bay over the years. The food was excellent as you would expect at most high-end Japanese establishments. This fish was fresh and the presentation excellent for every dish. The highlight of the meal was their rendition of Roast Beef. Although it was served cold, it still somehow managed to melt like butter in your mouth. Tanakaya is a MUST for any foreign traveler looking for a traditional Japanese meal with a little bit of history included. We were even given souvenir packets to take home. On a side note, we were pleasantly surprised to learn that all of our drinks (sake, beer, plum wine), were included in the price of the meal at no extra charge. I will most definitely be stopping by on my next visit to Japan.
