Just a 2-minute walk from Ryogoku Station, tucked into a narrow alley called Yokozuna Yokocho, lies Tonkatsu Hasegawa, one of Tokyo’s top pork cutlet specialists. Recognized for its consistently long lines at both lunch and dinner, this restaurant is known for using Hiraboku Bark Sangenton pork, a premium breed developed by Hirata Bokujo in Yamagata Prefecture. On my visit, I ordered their signature Shaton Buta Brian — a rare chateaubriand cut from the center of the pork tenderloin. Despite its thickness, the meat was incredibly tender, with a rich sweetness in the fat and a juicy umami flavor that spread with each bite. The pork was lightly coated with house-made breadcrumbs and fried in a carefully balanced blend of lard and rice oil, resulting in a crisp yet airy texture. The dish is best enjoyed with just salt or a bit of wasabi to highlight the natural quality of the meat. The side dishes were equally well-crafted. Finely shredded cabbage was fresh and crunchy; miso soup with nameko mushrooms and mitsuba herbs offered a gentle contrast to the rich cutlet; and the hijiki seaweed simmered dish and pickled vegetables were flavorful accents that rounded out the meal. Every detail reflected the chef’s care and technique. Although the label on the storefront reads “Tochigi Prefecture,” this refers to the final fattening location of the pigs, which is standard in Japan. The pork itself is still part of the Hiraboku Bark Sangenton brand — a breed with carefully controlled lineage, feed, and growing conditions. The quality and flavor were unmistakably top-tier. Prices are a bit higher than average tonkatsu shops, but the experience and satisfaction more than justify the cost. There’s also a sister location in Higashi-Ginza (Tsukiji area), which is more frequented by tourists. However, if you’re looking for a more traditional atmosphere and the full attention of skilled chefs, I highly recommend the Ryogoku main branch. For travelers seeking a truly elevated tonkatsu experience — one that goes beyond the typical “deep-fried” image — Tonkatsu Hasegawa offers an unforgettable taste of Japanese craftsmanship and hospitality.

“Top Class Tonkatsu in Ryogoku”

The place opens at 11;00 am and they line up from 10:00 or earlier which indicates Hasegawa's popularity. It is quite small and you are in and out but they serve very good Tonkatsu at a very reasonable price.

“Very popular, but too much fat on the pork”

I read about this place on some online reviews, and it was very well reviewed. I love Tonkatsu, and have been to many places in Japan that serve it, including my favourite thus far at Maisen restaurant. I waited in line with others to get in, as it isn't a huge place, but seems to have a strong fo...llowing. Waited a bit for it to arrive, and looked very good. On first bite, the texture just didn't seem right, so I looked at the piece and it was basically a piece of fat. I politely removed it from my mouth. Then looked at the other slices of the pork "loin" and maybe 20-25% of it was just fat. I have never had Tonkatsu where there was so much fat, usually some on the edge, but not all through it. So, I am not sure if I was an unlucky one, or if this is the pork that they usually serve, but I never intentionally eat fat. It is already deep fried. It isn't inexpensive either, the cheaper version is 1980 Yen ($24 CAD). So if you are ok with a lot of fat, go ahead and visit. If you want lean pork deep fried tonkatsu, you better look somewhere else.

“Deservedly The Best Tonkatsu”

It's just 2 mins away from Rogoku Station, which is just 2 stops away from Akihabara. So as one of cheap Michelin eats in Tokyo, it's location is not that far off from the city center, unless you stay in Shibuya or Shinjuku area, in that case you should prepare around 35 minutes travel time. We reac...hed there 11.30 am on a Sunday, and there's a small queue already. We just need to wait around 20 minutes though, not bad at all compared to other cheap Michelin eats in Tokyo. We opted for the most expensive menu that cost 2,800 yen and glad that we did so! The pork loin was perfect, cooked to perfection and simply the best tonkatsu we have ever tasted! They have the standard tonkatsu sweet black sauce, but they recommended to enjoy the tonkatsu with pink salt and wasabi. Needless to say, not all tonkatsu could taste that good with only pink salt and wasabi. All in all it was really good, not too greasy, very tender pork meat and umami! If you could only pick one cheap Michelin eats in Tokyo, Hasegawa is the right choice! Unforgetable taste plus easy travel and quick enough queuing time combine to make it the best pick!
