“Good Soba Restaurant in City Center”
A friend, who lives in Kyoto, took us here for dinner during our recent December stay in the city. The small restaurant offers a variety of soba set menus with information in English; friendly, professional, efficient staff; and a comfortable, casual setting. The restaurant is located on a basement ...level below the Kyoto Hotel Okura. We had a reservation for 6:30 p.m. and Ukiya was about half-full at the time with customers, who were all Japanese. Though our friend is fluent in Japanese, the waiter switched to English when my husband and I had questions. The waiter’s friendly demeanor made us feel most welcome. And the many offerings meant a wide selection, which was good for variety but meant it took awhile for us to make our choices. Once our order went in, the food came quickly. I had cold soba while the others chose hot soup with soba. Our sets included tempura shrimp and vegetables plus small dishes, such as seaweed salad. Most items proved to be tasty and fresh but I thought the tempura had too heavy a batter and was slightly over cooked. For those staying in the city center, I think that Ukiya offers good soba in a convenient location.

“Excellent Service & Hospitality”
They provide excellent service and hospitality from the door persons, luggage personnel, in our case, young women, welcoming reservationists, and best concierge personnel who are always eager to assist with directions and restaurant reservations. In fact, the concierge recommended and made reservat...ions at the best local food and seasonal restaurant within walking distance from the hotel. We were the only non Japanese so it’s primarily attended by locals. No worries-we were served by an extremely kind waitress who eagerly described each dish and the variety of sake that was served. Great restaurant & great hotel!

“Fabulous meal at a very affordable price”
To find this place is a bit tricky, but it's well worth the search. Here's a tip: Once you found the hotel lobby, you need to take the elevator to B2 to find the right place. At first sight, it doesn't look all that posh, but once you sit down, order your food and taste the quality of your meal, you... will notice that it's at an entirely different level than the price suggests. Simply amazing!! Well prepared, beautifully presented, and the service are very helpful. If you enjoy fine Japanese cuisine, this is absolutely the place to go!!

“Tasty! ”
We would not have found this if our hotel concierge had not pointed us into this direction, but it turns out this place has been making soba for 127 years so there must be a good reason for this! Dinner was great, we did stay within the smaller English menu and it was just fine. Quick service as in ...any Japanese restaurant but staff was very nice and tried their best in English. Not the cheapest meal we have had, but worth trying. We were the only two non Japanese in there and by far the youngest.... Clearly an old time favourite ...

“Quality soba”
We watched the chef making the dough for the noodles and they are the real, handcrafted deal. The eel with rice set menu was superb, as was the cold soba with dipping sauce and a side course of assorted tempura. The actual menu is considerably more expansive than the few items translated onto t...he English version of the menu, so don't be afraid to point at what you want in photos on the japanese menu or what you see at the surrounding tables. The wait staff are exceedingly kind and helpful, but not multilingual. I generally avoid hotel restaurants, but this was good quality at a fair price.
