We stumbled on this after temple walking all morning. Across the street from Ninan ji entrance. First good sign a large number of Japanese women out for lunch together. Second good sign; we got there at opening and wrangled a table without reservations and the waiting lines just got longer. FYI we ...arrived at 11:20. It is a set menu and the men had fish (sashimi and grilled as depicted) and the women had foie gras (seared). Served Kaiseki style the courses were all delicious. Western friendly. It was a delicious lunch worthy of the pictures we took.

Walked in because I was starving. They had a JPY 1,800 bento-box sort of deal, which including a plate of 5 sushi, 1 miso soup cup, 1 bowl of rice with chicken and roe; an interesting coffee jelly dessert followed.

Touring temples had made us hungry and we started to search for an restaurant near the Ninna-ji temple which was our last one to visit that day. Most of the restaurants in that area are closed between lunch and dinner, re-opening again for dinner around 5pm as Sakon. So, we had to wait a bit but for...tunately they opened in time. I found the restaurant quite stylish. It is a japanese restaurant and it is decorated really beautifully. The hostess speaks good english. On the list there are several tasting menus from 7 to 12 dishes if I remember correctly. We had not prepared for a long dinner because we still wanted to go downtown to see the pre-festivities of Gion Matsuri. There was still an option to have lunch special which we happily took. It was a set menu with delicious miso, tuna, omelette, shrimp and eel in a salad type of dish (see photo). Everything was very good. We even got some dessert, coffee jelly and tea! The service was polite and attentative, it was a true pleasure to dine here. It might be better to plan to visit here during the lunch time if you are visit ing the temple. Because the temple closes 4:30 so have to hang around for 30mins before Sakon is open for dinner.
