“Reasonably priced standard (but delicious) French bistro fare”
Compared to many French restaurants in Tokyo, Canard offered delicious food at reasonable prices, the right amount of service and acceptable wait time between servings. Run by the Japanese woman chef/owner in business for 29 years, its small (only 14 seats including a counter) and warm ambiance make...s one feel quite comfortable. Each dish was expertly prepared. One can order Ala Carte or allow the chef to decide. Conveniently located in Shinjuku. Reservations probably necessary.

“Great surprise”
With all the wonderful restaurants in Tokyo, it may seem odd to choose a French one. However, we love France and after a few days of Japanese food the temptation was too much! It was wonderful. A tiny bistro style place that would've been right at home anywhere in France. The owner/chef is charming ...and the 3 course menu (with olives and bread) was absolutely delicious. We wishes she served breakfast too (decent non-Japanese breakfasts are hard to find in Tokyo). Bravo, Madame!

“Still excellent more than a decade later...”
My wife and I first visited Canard in 2005. We enjoyed our experience so much that we returned in 2007 when we came back. Now eleven years later, we had to see how this little gem in the basement and away from the hustle and bustle of Shinjuku. Not much has changed - the photos of past costumers s...till hang on the wall. The small, tight quarters reminiscent of a bistro in Lyon. Great service and fine food. It’s home-cooking French style, which compared to most cuisines is still very rich, flavourful, sumptuous, and decadent. The confit canard was superb, and the consommé to die for. If we lived in Tokyo, we would be here at least once a month. If you’re in Tokyo in June, we were told Canard will celebrate its 20th Anniversary, so come visit to see what they may have in store. We might have to come back for this one reason.

“Chez mamie”
Food from a French hearth and home. Not haute cuisine but true traditional French cooking. The chef knows how to cook in the French style. All too often nouvelle cuisine has overpowered traditional French, but not at Restaurant Canard. The food we had at lunch here was much better than some of the ...high end restaurants in Tokyo. Cannot praise it high enough.

“Outstanding food”
Cute little French place in a basement. You're not sure about it when you walk in, but one bite will make you a believer. We each ordered different things and everything was amazing. Sat at the bar and talked to the owner/chef, very interesting woman and very talented. We're back home in the states ...now and still dream about the amazing French food we had in Tokyo.
