We did not make a reservation, so decided to take our chances at lunch time. We arrived 30 minutes before opening and were 4th in the queue. Once everyone with a reservation has been seated, you will be allowed in on a first come first served basis. We ordered the lunch time set meal, which was e...xcellent value for the amount and quality of food we were given. There is a large pool/tank with the squid swimming inside, so your seafood really does not get any fresher than this! The squid sashimi arrived still moving, and once we had finished the body of the squid, the tentacles were taken back to the kitchen to be deep fried for our next course. The service was efficient and polite, the presentation of the food and the staff were impeccable. One of the better meals we had on this trip.

They are not friendly, maybe I speak poor Japanese and mainly used English! This was a surprise to me. With my bad Japanese, Japanese people are always friendly and very helpful from the restaurant I visited. This one is an exceptional! And They did not inform me they charged me on the cold dishes,(...小鉢 ）which they just brought to us and without saying anything. bad bad bad bad bad.... The only reason I give one star is because squid is fresh and good. I recommend to go to other Izakaya（居酒屋）to try fresh squid if you are in Fukuoka. The other one I visited was more friendly and helpful. Very bad 悪い👎

As fresh as it can be! The cuttlefish they net out of the tank in front of the dinners and prepare the sashimi in full view of the diners! Truly an excellent experience! Even the wasabi doesn’t come out of a tube!

The place is awesome! This is where you get to savor super fresh sashimi, especially the renowned squid of Fukuoka. Lunch menu may not offer a great variety of dishes, it I think it’s best to choose what the restaurant has offered: well balanced set menus. Fresh ingredients and super sumptuous. The... prices are quite attractive too.

We were brought to Kawatarou Honten for dinner by a business partner. The restaurant is in the southeast corner of Nakasu across the river from Canal City. The interior is traditional Japanese restaurant. There are two types of tables- rooms and counters. The rooms are varied in size: the bigger o...nes can easily fit 15 persons. The counters are across from pools which house the restaurant's specialty: squid. Kawatarou specializes in ikizukuri: a Fukuoka specialty sushi which involves preparing the squid's torso into bite sized slices while they are still live. The squid are actually still alive when they hit the table and so are incredibly fresh, sweet, and delicious eaten with salt or wasabi soy sauce. Other dishes we had include an assortment of sashimi, sweet potato tempura, and a pumpkin ice cream finish. The food and service in Kawatarou are impeccable. The price tag matches the quality. If the idea of ikizukuri does not scare you away, I highly recommend making this restaurant your choice to splurge on during your stay in Fukuoka. Reservations at least the day before are essential.
