“The easy pre-show dining option at New National Theater.”
The New National Theater is a wonderful venue, but with performances beginning at 7.30 and not a lot of obvious dining options nearby, the easy way out is to eat at the complex. There are two choices: A slightly misleadingly named "buffet," serving sandwiches, drinks and very little else, and Maes...tro, an Italian restaurant. My husband and I chose the latter, and although it was a little pricey for standard Italian food, the formal atmosphere and well dressed clientele added to our "night at the ballet" experience. Our beginner's Japanese was fully tested by the menu, which makes no concessions to the gaijin, but because this is an Italian restaurant there aren't any real surprises, and we both managed to safely order pasta dishes. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat at Maestro, but if you have tickets to the ballet or opera and want to avoid the stress of rushing from a restaurant in time for your show, Maestro is a good choice.
