磯丸水産 大久保駅前店（東京）

We had literally stepped off a train (Kyoto-Tokyo-Shinjuku-Okubo) and booked into our hotel (Hundred Stay Shinjuku) when we found this restaurant for dinner, It had fish tanks with live fish, etc, an English menu, and took credit cards. That's all we needed to know. This is quite a large restauran...t, and the staff worked hard, The 2 girls seemed to be everywhere, but still very caring, helping us with the menu, how to eat/garnish the food, etc. Note - it is a restaurant that allows smoking at the tables, But aside from that, we ate well, the fish was fresh, cooked nicely (when we had it cooked - we had sashimi as well) and the beer cold. And the price was pretty reasonable compared to what I've paid in Australia, Also note, you can cook your own at the table if you want - we saw a couple cook scallops right out of the shell and then squid on the little barbeque at their table. We were happy with our dinner.

There are apparently other restaurants of this name in Shinjuku, but one would never guess it is part of a chain. Shin Okubo has tons of ethnic Asian restaurants, one of which I was headed to, but I was too early, and so went Japanese seafood instead. The restaurant feels very relaxed and welcomin...g and fun. Lots of locals. I sat at the counter, but it's a great place for groups to go and settle in for eating and drinking, as many clearly were. The lunch menu functions until 5 pm. I had raw salmon and salmon roe on rise, miso soup (huge), roasted. sliced eggplant--to die for. I would go again just for that. It's a couple of minutes from Shin-Okubo station and nearly across the street from Okubo station, a bit towards Shin Okubo. Just had a great feel. My meal was less than 1500 yen for all. Didn't drink, because had places to go.
