The ambience was good, food on the good side. Price reasonable. Service attentive. I had tempura for dinner and that was reasonably well prepared.

“Rich in history and fine cuisine!”

This was not my first kaiseki meal in Tokyo, but was far and away the most memorable! Here's what to expect: * located in the actual 400-year-old garden of the Hotel New Otani, one of the famed "Big 3" hotels in Tokyo--gorgeous setting! * There are only a handful of private rooms, so this is not t...he kind of kaiseki restaurant that caters to foreign tourists. It is a serene and beautifully-maintained example of high simplicity: immaculate tatami, natural wood finishes, and nice modern foot-warmers in the well beneath the table :-) * I'm the opposite of a culinary adventurist, so was apprehensive---but determined to try everything. Surprise! Everything was delicious, and all that one could hope for, in both exciting flavor, seasonal preparation, and absolutely stunning presentation. * They offer a choice of small, medium, and large prix fixe courses, and we opted for the medium. Cannot list all the elements, but in this one meal we had: he- and she-crab from the Tottori region, monkfish liver, miso-cured foie gras, a tender little whole abalone, roasted blowfish roe, incredible maguro and yellowtail sashimi (and I normally won't eat sashimi!), roasted rosy perch (like buttah!), shark fin in savory custard, Saga beef sukiyaki style, and house-made persimmon ice cream with a perfect La France pear, along with many other savory items, assembled like art and nicely explained in English. * And it wasn't on the printed menu, but we also were presented with an artistic plate of...FUGU! We were jokingly assured that the chef is licensed for fugu, and yes, we survived... * It was just the two of us in a large room overlooking a brilliant autumn maple and part of the garden...and at the conclusion of the meal, our server told us it was their largest room, which had hosted a dinner for the 1986 Tokyo Summit. She shared a seating map, and giggled a bit as she explained that my husband was sitting in US President Ronald Reagan's seat, while i was in Chancellor Helmut Kohl's place. The other guests at this summit dinner included Mitterand, Abe (senior, the father of the current PM of Japan), Nakasone, Thatcher, and Chirac, amongst others. Yipes! * The restaurant staff were all lovely: traditionally attired, supremely courteous, and lots of personality: our server was a sweet and very friendly young woman, the older lady who came in to dish up the amazing "new season" rice was a bit more opaque but terribly elegant, and the manager greeted us warmly and bowed us out graciously. * of course, you must expect a hefty price tag---but for us, it was a fantastic experience, totally worth every cent. PS Plan to spend some time walking around in the garden, either before or after your meal---it is especially pretty after sundown...

A lover of Japanese food, I was not disappointed by my meal here. Delicate flavours, food proudly and lovingly prepared. I'd return in a flash.
