Ｔｒａｔｔｏｒｉａ Ｃｉａｏ

My lovely wife and I had dinner at Trattoria Ciao situated in Hibiya literally under the train tracks in an arch. Warm atmosphere and quite homely with lots of Italian thrown around by the locals. We started with a cheese platter and an assortment of starters - delicious. We each had a pizza as a ma...in course followed by gelato and gelato espresso- just perfect. Accompanied by a wonderful bottle of red wine and Lemoncellos to end made for a wonderful evening.

Between the glitz and glamour of Ginza and the park-like quiet of Hibiya lies something that is very different from either. Yurakucho is the area on either side of the train tracks around and south of Tokyo Station. It is also - predominantly - the area under those tracks. And it’s here that is home... to dozens of small restaurants and bars. This is where you can find Tokyo’s salarymen. It is where you can find reasonably priced izakaya and yakitori. It is also the place where a westerner can get an inexpensive taste of home - good, well-priced Italian food. In Tokyo. Under the train tracks. Trattoria Chao Hibiya is in a brick arch, on a street on the northwest side of the train tracks. The interior is a handsome mix of wood and brick. Still expectations were moderate going there for lunch but the restaurant was inexpensive and had English menus (with rather smudgy, washed-out pictures for greater universality). We started with some prosciutto followed by spaghetti with tomato sauce and a margherita pizza. The prosciutto di parma was sliced to a very nice thinness. Little else can be said of that except that it was an auspicious start to the meal. The spaghetti would have made proud any moderately priced Italian restaurant anywhere in the world. Yes, it was that good. It was made from dried pasta (which is perfectly OK) and cooked to just the firm side of al dente (better that than the alternative). The sauce was a straight-up pomodoro and was very tasty. They had shaker-parm at the table. Given how well they did everything else, it was surprising that they didn’t provide fresh parm. Still, no complaints. The pizza had a medium-thin crust with a decent amount of tug and chew. The sauce was as good as the one on the spaghetti and overall made for a good pizza. The spaghetti was about 1000 yen and the pizza was a few yen more. Given the location, that is quite a good deal. Add the overall quality of the offerings and it is a very good deal.

This restaurant feels very warm and cosy and the staff are so friendly and nice! It's great for a romantic dinner or gathering with friends for a delicious meal. The pizza, risotto and drinks are great, however, the food on the pricey side (large pizza for 1,600). I would always come back, when in t...he area!

It was right before 20:00 without reservation; but we luckily managed to have seats at the counter. Variety of antipasto, freshly made pizza and good reasonable wines. Satisfied for a casual gathering at a very convenient location, close to the Yurakucho station.

I come Ciao 1st time tonight. It's really good atmosphere and tasty cuisine. Prosciutto crudo, Raclette, Risotto Parmigiano, Bagna cauda...all of these are delicious. And price is reasonable considering location.
