“THE place to go for straw fire- seared Bonito!”
I went out with a group of ex- colleagues and we ordered a private room with the 11- course “seafood parasol” menu. The restaurant is famous for its Bonito. They stick the bonito filets on wooden skewers and then sear the fish directly in flames from burning straw. I have been to the “mother ship” ...in Kochi on Shikoku and both locations are booming. Both locations have a bit of a show with the Bonito getting seared in the straw flames. It makes for a great picture to show the friends back home, too. The food was excellent and the signature bonito did not disappoint. You can dunk it in soy sauce but the locals rub on a bit of dry wasabi, touch the fish to the flaky sea salt provided, and eat it that way. Any way you prefer, it’s delicious. The presentation of our eleven courses was beautiful and the service was outstanding, I think our server was dedicated to the six of us and he was right on top of things. No kidding, a new beer appeared within 60 seconds of ordering it. As we were ushered to our upstairs room, I could see that the restaurant downstairs was jammed at 7pm on a Friday evening so I think that reservations are a must; in Shinbashi on a Friday evening you could wave an old radish in the air and customers would probably line up, it’s so busy. I was there to snap a couple of photos a few days later at 6pm on a Monday and it wasn’t busy yet – still, reservations here are a must if you’re eating at prime time.

“High expectations, but...”
We had high expectations, but left disappointed. Maybe I had eaten to much raw fish previously during my stay in Tokyo, so I had great difficulties enjoying big lumps of tuna or pieces of eel. The tuna was grilled in high temperature but was still almost raw. The night before we had similar food jus...t across the street, which was much more to my liking.
