和食・酒 えん 虎ノ門

My partner and I ended up at En sort of by accident one Friday night when we could not get into any restaurants in the nearby “Tora-no-mon” Yoko-cho. The restaurant is sort of like a modern, high-end Izakaya with a Wa-fu fusion-esque menu. We were surprised that a table was available, but now I kin...d of see why. Initially enticed by what looked like a predictably good menu, I was disappointed by most of the dishes. My partner and I ordered a series of small to medium sized dishes, and we shared those that we liked but mostly ate what our own dishes, although we took bites of each other’s respective orders. He ordered avocado and maguro poke, admittedly I don’t like avocado but I do like maguro and I found the sauce to be way too sweet (he didn’t have a problem with it though). He also had a fried shrimp appetizer which was fine, but nothing special. He also ordered a seafood-au-gratin dish which he said was decent, but I didn’t really try it as I don’t think those flavors (seafood and cheese/cream) go to together. The dish I was most excited for and also took the longest (and was also the most expensive) was a Japanese porkchop like thing with fresh ginger shavings on top. The good parts of the meat were OK, but most of it was chewy gristle and was really a disappointment. Service was good, especially using the convenient call button, and the atmosphere is comfortable, but unless you have nowhere else/don’t know where to go I can’t give this place a strong recommendation. 3/5
