“Hawaii done poorly. You can do much better than this”

Japan LOVES Hawaii. Yokohama REALLY LOVES Hawaii. There are handfuls of Hawaiian restaurants and stores. And to be honest, not only none of them are legit, I haven't been to one that I can say is really good. This is sad because in this day and age, it is so easy to do it right. With travel so simp...le and attainable now, people fly to Hawaii all the time and get to eat actual Hawaiian food. So they know what's up. So why do Japanese restaurant owners time and time again decide to Japanize their menus and take away the authenticity? It's not only a slap in the face to the host countries food they are emulating, but it makes it so people start to think that's what that food is actually like. For the people who haven't been to Hawaii, they are going to think there is lettuce/salad in a loco moco! My god that is almost sacrilege!! Bear with me, there is a real review within this rant! :) Before you think "duh, come on, it's Japan, they need to make it more palatable for the local crowd", that's rubbish. Japanese overall have a pretty wide and knowledgeable palate. I can imagine this is the same thought that crosses the mind of someone from China visiting the US, and sees "Chinese food", but is confused when they see Orange chicken and cream cheese rangoons on the menu. There is no need to dumb it down for the local audience. If you are going to open an ethnic restaurant, by god, at least keep it ethnic and authentic. Any and every Hawaiian who walks by this place will do the exact same thing- look at the menu and say wtf, shake their head, and walk away disappointed. Which is exactly what I should have done, but this was the end of a very long day of playing tour guide, and we needed to eat before going back to our hotel room which was just upstairs. (The restaurant is in the bottom floor of the Colette Mare shopping mall in front of Sakuragicho station) BTW, I'm normally not this cynical or critical, but they have taken it two steps too far. Looking at the menu, there are 5 of us, so a few different things will have been ordered after all is said and done. Right away my agro starts, becauSe they are saying Hawaiian this and that, when in reality we don't even eat that here!!! Examples- basil poke, smoked tuna dip, and lomi lomi tomato / mozzarella pizza. Not one of those things even exist in Hawaii, let alone are they favorites that should be sold as such on any menu. That's like opening a Japanese restaurant in Hawaii and serving "Japanese favorites" such as raw teriyaki chicken katsu, deep fried natto, and mochi sushi salad.......that would be an insult and a disservice to Japanese food, and frankly Japan. Anyways, I order a premium teriyaki loco moco, whose description says "Japanese style, even a favorite in Hawaii" once again, not true. Nobody serves that here, and nobody would ever put a salad or lettuce in a loco moco. I order it for what it is. We also had a regular premium loco moco and a kailua pig / pineapple pizza. While the food isn't horrible, it isn't worth going back. I guess I could forget about being from Hawaii , and re-write a review about this cool Japanese Hawaiian fusion food I had. But alas, I can't un-know what I do, and what they are trying to accomplish here. Being in Japan, I love trying local and/or craft beer. I notice a beer called Heartland on tap, so I ask the tween waitress what it is. Sad to say she has no clue what kind of beer it is, where its from, and only guesses that "I think it's imported". I had a feeling she was wrong, so I ordered one, then decided to Google it while she made it. Turns out it is local, made my Kirin, and is a Euro pale lager. I inform her hoping she remembers, that what she can know next time someone asks her. Aside from the horrific thing they have done to Hawaiian food here, the omnipresent misspellings of English on menus (ox tale pho? Another one that doesn't exist. But it's oxtail), and under-impressive service, I have to say typical of Japanese style- they got the interior right. They did a good job and have you you feeling like you could be in Hawaii. Some great artwork by Heather Brown featured as well. They always put so much effort in appearance, if they would just give the FOOD- the point, the purpose - that same respect. I would rename this from "manoa aloha table" to "no moa aloha" table.
