For this dinner, we wished to experience a sukiyaki dinner. The locale was in a high rise adjacent to the palace grounds with windows of glass, but just a dark view at night. The routine is Japanese women in traditional garb cooking the steak at table side. For an American, it is very difficult to ...determine the different levels of food order within one category, such as shamu-shamu. For an American, there is no one to explain the different price levels. Pictures are provided as you eat. Typical Japanese taste treats, then the steak cooked in the middle of the table. Food was just OK, nothing special and would not return.

The service was terrible, even downright rude. It's hard to believe this is a high-end wagyu sukiyaki restaurant with a century of history, where the average cost per person is nearly 150 USD. Here's what happened: Since we had a large group, we split into three tables. Two of the tables were close... to each other, with a narrow aisle in between. One of the more senior waitstaff (wearing a dark kimono) came over to serve food and, without asking for permission, pushed my friend's chair forward. My friend was sitting on the chair at the time, talking to someone at another table, and was completely caught off guard by the push (imagine the scene). My friend was furious and immediately questioned the server in English. Another friend who spoke Japanese quickly asked why they were being so rude. The server defended herself, saying the aisle was too narrow. Our Japanese-speaking friend pointed out that even if the space was tight, she should have asked the person to move the chair themselves, instead of rudely pushing it forward. The senior staff member, realizing she was in the wrong, apologized, but according to our friend who lives in Japan, her attitude still showed resentment, as if she was unhappy about being called out. We then asked to speak to the manager. The manager eventually apologized, and the other staff around us bowed and apologized too. We didn’t want to ruin the mood, so we let it go. The senior waitress continued to serve us afterward. We had initially considered asking for a different server, but another very polite waitress mentioned that she was senior and we shouldn't make it difficult for them, so we let it slide. We originally came here because a friend had been to the Kyoto main location and said it was delicious. So, we thought we'd try the Tokyo branch—what a mistake that was. To be fair, the ingredients were good, but they insisted on adding sugar to the dish (we requested no sugar, but they said it was part of the traditional recipe and still used half). It ended up tasting a bit too greasy. I don't want to overstate this, but if this were a Japanese customer, would this senior waitress have been so rude? I suggest blacklisting this place.

We had a nice dinner with fantastic meat and service. The cooking was made at the table by one of the traditional dressed Japanese ladies in the light of sunset with a castle overview

One of the better Sukiyaki I had in Tokyo. Ordered the Kansai style sukiyaki and the Kyoto beef was very good. We ordered the set lunch which cost about 5800 yen per person.

I order sukiyaki whenever I can, and the sukiyaki here was the best I've ever had. The appetizers were so good they could have been offerings on a fancy tasting menu. The Japanese lady in traditional costume explained everything in charming, broken English. We didn't have a reservation and were give...n a table that didn't have the best view, but when I asked permission to take photos of the view from other windows where there were other diners, I was very quickly allowed to do so.
