“Good luck trying to find it…..plot twist, it’s actually called Sake!!”
If you’ve ever wanted to combine the thrill of fine dining with the adrenaline rush of a treasure hunt, Nihonshu Genka in Shinjuku is your place. Our group of five spent a solid 30 minutes wandering the backstreets of Tokyo, frantically refreshing Google Maps like it owed us rent money. Plot twist:... the restaurant isn’t actually called Nihonshu Genka on the sign. It’s called SAKE. Just… SAKE. Nothing else. We’re starting to think “nihonshu” actually translates to “good luck finding us, foreigners.” 😂 Once we stumbled in—sweaty, confused, but victorious—it was totally worth it. The vibe? Cozy and lively, with enough sake options to make you forget your navigation trauma. The staff were super nice, even though they probably heard us yelling “WHERE IS THIS PLACE?!” from two streets over. Now, about the onion rings. Do not—under any circumstances—expect onion rings. You will, in fact, receive onions. Raw ones. Sliced and proud. Somewhere, an actual onion ring wept. On the plus side, they take bookings for groups, which in Tokyo makes this place rarer than a unicorn that pours sake. Our party of five fit right in, even after our spiritual journey to find it. In summary: 🥢 Sake: 10/10 🧭 Directions: 0/10 🧅 Onion rings: technically correct, emotionally devastating Would I go again? Absolutely. But next time, I’m dropping breadcrumbs from Shinjuku Station.

“Great experience”
Great Sake, great service. Quite hard to find but another jewel in Tokyo’s crown once you get there. Close to Shibuya station too.

“Great sake tasting venue”
We had a great time tasting different sakes and appetizers at this underground local bar. The public was entirely local. We ordered a taster of Kokuryo, one of Kazenomori and one of Kikuhime and they were all good - Recommended!
