Mori Mori is a classic izakaya—a Japanese-style pub—one of several clustered in the neighborhood. After walking around and checking out our options, we chose it as our first choice for dinner for our family of four, including two parents and two young adult children. The place was very full on a Su...nday night toward the end of December, with a few groups clearly in full bōnenkai mode, celebrating the end of the year and taking advantage of the all-you-can-drink options. The atmosphere was loud, lively, and very old-school—this is not a quiet place. We were fortunate to arrive just as a group was leaving, which opened up a table, as there are only about half a dozen tables along with counter seating. Picture menus were readily available, which would be especially helpful for groups without someone who speaks Japanese. Most of our family is proficient in Japanese, but it was still nice to have visual confirmation when ordering. The food menu included all the standard izakaya small plates. Highlights included sashimi, grilled fish and meats, pickled vegetables, fried dishes, and especially the fresh oysters, served several different ways and seemingly a house specialty. The drink menu was extensive but written in Japanese, with a separate card explaining the all-you-can-drink options. Ordering had an old-school, free-flowing feel. The wait staff worked all the tables, and calling out for another round of drinks or additional dishes was the standard approach. Most items arrived in a reasonable amount of time. In the end, the food was excellent, and we really enjoyed sampling a wide variety of dishes over the course of the meal. The one significant downside is that smoking is allowed. I’m particularly sensitive to cigarette smoke. While the ventilation system was quite good and it wasn’t overwhelming, smoke was still present and detracted from fully enjoying the flavors of the food. Although indoor smoking is generally no longer allowed in restaurants, small izakaya operating prior to 2020 are grandfathered in, which likely applies to many places in this neighborhood.

hey, this is real life Tokyo, but for us, Westerners, they've got an English menu, and they even speak some English. But the armosphere, the food, the laughter on a Friday night, it all adds up to this typically Japanese environment. We enjoyed that as much as the excellent food (for an izakaya, the...y serve really nice things). If you stay in this neighbourhood, it's worth a try. OK, in Europe we're not used to smoking in a restaurant, but that's one thing you can't escape in Japan, we guess
