“Don't Get Ichiran Ramen Packaged, Get the Amazing Live Version!”
Before I tried real-life Ichiran ramen, I tried one of their packaged versions at a store in America. I thought it was decent for homemade tonkotsu ramen but a little overpriced. I figured I would try the real deal while in Japan just to see if the hype was better than the to-go version. Thank...fully, the real-life version is very much worth it. I’ve had my fair share of good and even great tonkotsu ramen in America, but this is definitely one of the best I’ve had in the world. I’m not always in the mood for pork broth ramen, but if I am, I want options. I want the potential to make the broth as rich and oily as possible. I want to be able to choose noodle firmness, broth strength, toppings, extras, and all the usual stuff ramen places offer. Thankfully, Ichiran provides all that. Before you even enter, you fill out your order sheet. Once you get to the front of the line, you go to a vending machine to add any extras you want before sitting down. This is the only spot where you can pay by credit card, by the way. Once you sit down in a semi-private seat (you can open the dividers next to you if you’re with a party), any extra food orders are cash only. Anyway, I got thick noodles and extra-rich broth, and it was amazing. It was so good that I got extra noodles and even tried a few more of their sides—which meant I had to pay cash, but I didn’t mind since there’s a cool feature: you fill out a sheet of paper, press a button on the table in front of you, and someone will take your order and get you your extra food. Just throw your cash there too, and you’ll be good. There’s also a fun little feature: if you want to use the bathroom or walk away from your table for some reason, you can put up a provided sign so the servers know you’re gone—no need to gesture or anything. If you want to try delicious tonkotsu ramen in Japan and are afraid of more specialized spots, you can’t go wrong with the tourist favorite Ichiran, no matter which location you decide to go to.

“Be Early for Lunch!”
Place your order by the kiosk once you enter before seating. Very few cubicles! so be early for lunch to avoid waiting. Very filling and heavy meal for you to jumpstart your day! As courtesy to people waiting in line, once you are done, leave.

“Cost-Effective if You Can Wait”
Stopped here while in the area looking for a noodle type dish and found out that this was actually a chain with worldwide operations. Ordering consists of a line where at the entrance, you fill out preferences such as flavour strength, richness, and noodle hardness. You then wait for a seat at what... is essentially a seat at a bar type set up with dividers where you get served through a small window (the dividers can be folded if you're part of a group). I ordered the classic tonkotsu ramen. The flavour was very interesting, I chose a light flavour strength with a mild richness and I felt that this broth was less salty than what I get with typical tonkotsu, a combination I found melded very nicely. The pork was solid and wasn't overly seasoned which I like. I selected firm for the noodles and was not disappointed with them being cooked slightly over al dente. The service here is solid and welcoming although there's a bit of limited interaction since you can't really see the server's face and you're essentially eating in a phone booth. If atmosphere and a potentially lengthy wait aren't extreme deal breakers, this can be an easy way to get some cheap ramen in Tokyo.
