“Daishi, unagi, fried chicken, lovely staff — a great find.”
We are two Americans, one adventurous eater and one less so. We speak no Japanese although we try to use the basic courtesies when we can (please, thank you, so sorry). We decided to try Kankeri tonight because it was close to our hotel, has good reviews for its chicken, is especially known for i...ts eel and its daishi, and has an English menu. We had an absolutely delightful evening. Kankeri is a small restaurant, set up half in a Japanese dining style (low tables, remove your shoes) and half Western style (counter and table seating). The staff we dealt with were wonderfully friendly - more than enough English to help us understand how to order and how to enjoy what we had ordered. And oh, did we enjoy it. We ordered a la carte. Our meal started with a small sampler of the restaurant’s daishi broth, which was amazing. We then shared some broccoli, some local vegetables, some fried potatoes, and then bowls of rice with chicken and eel, served with a kettle of the broth to make a soup once we had sampled the meats. Even our less adventurous eater was singing Kankeri’s praises by the end of the meal. This is a restaurant that is not touristy but that can make even foreigners feel comfortable, and it serves absolutely delicious food. Please do give it a try if you are in the area.
