“Hearty meal”
Ikasei is an Izakaya-like restaurant featured in almost every travel book on Hakodate I've read so far. - Menu: they offer a translated menu in English and Chinese upon request. The dishes and prices are identical to their Japanese menu. Unfortunately, there is no translation for the daily menu. -... Favourite dishes: crab salad, hitsumabushi-like rice with dashi soup, fried oysters, squid gyozas and chawanmushi (included in their cover charge) - Location: in walking distance to Hakodate's JR, tram and bus stations - Small down-sides: we ordered the spearsquid sashimi in the daily recommendation menu but it wasn't the live squid we were hoping for. We could not appreciate their Shuto (also on the daily menu) because the rich, creamy cheese covered the original flavour.

“Fresh squid sashimi”
Food was very good. Squid sashimi with live head and tentacles still dancing. Tebasaki wings, mackerel, crab porridge, and crab salad all was good. Unfortunately if you are handicapped or have a hard time climbing stairs if there is no room downstairs they will force you upstairs. There was room ...downstairs but they didn’t want to sit us at a big table for only 3. My parents had to climb up the steep stairs. Took about 5 to 10 minutes for them to get up. The only thing to beware about is there is a sitting surcharge fee of 400 yen per person. Other than that everything was good. I’d go again.
