“Awesome find in the basement! ”
We were initially looking for Susukino Sushikin along the same street, but was turned down as we did not have a reservation. Just further down the road on the opposite side, we some saw signs to shops in the basement and decided to check it out. To our surprise, there was no menu in English, ever...ything was in Japanese! Even communicating with the servers was a challenge as their English was very limited. We were hesitant but the servers were very warm and friendly. So we decided to give it a shot. Ordering was made slightly easier by the pictures available in the menu. However finding out what were in those pictures was a challenge, choosing the type of sashimi to order for the big platter was refreshing to me too! We communicated by translation apps! Service was unbelievably good, everyone was upbeat cheerful and full of smiles even though we did not understand each other. This must be a truly Japanese joint, where few tourists venture. My favourite item on the menu was the aburi sliced beef sushi (I don't know how else to call it- see pics), where there's "show time"! The servers blow torching the beef. Unbelievably delicious and sweet. The awesome servers even made us a little flag stuck on the beef sushi saying "welcome to Hokkaido"! These are what we ordered: beef sushi, squid tempura, fried cod fish, 4 types sashimi platter, crab cream croquette, 2 tsukune (special order which wasn't on menu) with raw egg. Love the cod and tsukune too! The total price was really affordable - estimated about ¥5000 yen. U can see the prices in the menu pics. After we finished dinner, the team of servers sent us off and were sooo helpful to help us put on our coats! It's almost like Michelin star restaurant treatment. Everything was taken care of. We left all smiles, back to street level. That's not all, as we were surprised... The 店长 (shop manager) ran after us to the street level and loudly thanks us across the street with a full 90degree bow! We were totally stunned with the super star treatment! Umisakura rocks!!! Totally made my trip!!
