Seiwasou was a fantastic experience. The staff were fantastic, especially Oni ( forgive me if I got that wrong). She took the time to explain each course to us, she was delightful and fun. The food was exquisite, genuine pictures of art. Overall, this was the best Japanese food experience we had ...during our trip to Japan. The chefs did a great job with each course, building up to the end, each better than the one before it. I would truly recommend Seiwasou if you are in Kyoto.

The venue was incredible and food was delicious (dessert was not to our taste but others may like!). Unfortunately we were disappointed by the service for the price. The website said that we should allow for 2.5-3 hours, but we were out in less than 1 hour 45. Courses were brought out together and b...efore we’d finished the last - at one point we had four different courses on the table with no explanation of what they were and in what order we should eat. We felt very rushed which was made worse by being also asked about taxis while we still had four courses left to eat. It also felt like for the price that a drink should have been included. When paying for the drinks, we were asked for exact change and if they could take our purse and count the money themselves, which felt uncomfortable and again like they were rushing us out the door.

Food (Kaiseki), hospitality and the venue are all unique experiences. Would give it 6 stars if I could. We will come back for the tempura menu next time.

A superb experience from beginning to end. Gracious reception and service in beautiful,traditional surroundings. We had the multi course kaiseki menu. Each course was superbly presented with exceptional attention to detail. Each course also came with unique crockery. The food,needless to say,was de...licious. All the while we had the quiet privacy of our own room looking out onto calming Japanese gardens. Highly recommended.

I placed a reservation for myself & four friends in early January using a concierge service. One of my friends is allergic to gluten and requires gluten free food, and I was genuinely struggling to find a restaurant suitable to cater for his birthday - especially with the language barrier. So, I was... very excited to find Seiwasou! And looking back now, it was absolutely a trip highlight, and I'm very excited to return when it's possible to travel again. During our lunch, there was two other large groups of people who, in any other restaurant, may have spoiled the calming effect of the garden, however I found that Seiwasou's rooms are cleverly laid out, and the service so thoughtful, that you would have never guessed had the staff not let us know ahead of time (and of course, seeing some small groups of people in the garden). We had a variety of dietary requests that made it difficult to enjoy meals together while travelling, however, Seiwasou made this seem easy. We had a wonderful multi-course lunch. Every dish was beautiful, and a testament to their chefs' skill! I have tried a number of other kaiseki meals before but still was impressed with the care and level of detail that goes into Seiwasou's food. The meals were fresh, delicious, beautiful and refined. As a small group of foreign friends (some of whom had only been to Japan once), we were truly blown away by the staff. They were SO friendly and welcoming, even for awkward folks like us. It felt really special even as we felt so out of place, and so unaccustomed to more formal meals (we were dressed a little casually). Even for the staff that spoke only a little English, they were very helpful and kind. No, this is not a "cheap" option, however I walked away feeling that I would remember the meal, so I think the value is excellent. Words alone don't describe how perfect this meal was, thank you Seiwasou!
