I tend to write reviews about restaurants that are memorable and serve peerless food. I feel compelled to write about Takara on my family's recent trip to Kyoto for none of these reasons. We decided to enjoy a meal overlooking the river so inquired to the menu of this place. We like Kaiseki food si...nce we can sample a decent variety of food so opted for 10,000 Yen per person set. The meal started off well however by 9pm we noticed how the food was suddenly being rushed and before we knew it we had 3 course of food swiftly placed at our table. Suddenly the cultured Japanese service and ambience was replaced by something akin to a fast food restaurant. Food was rushed to the table with explanation of what was placed to our table. My wife inquired to the wait staff why the food was being rushed and was informed that the restaurant was closing at 9pm. We told the staff we entered the restaurant at 8pm, ordered a bottle of sake at 8:30pm and would have appreciated being informed that we had to leave by this time. We would have never dined here if we knew we'd have the most rushed Kaiseki meal. Once we'd eaten dessert, we were asked to leave, even though we hadn't finished the sake. My wife complained that we hadn't finished drinking. What happened next has never happened to us before. The waitress proceeded to apologize, but as soon as she turned from the table she pulled the rudest of expressions and mouthed under her breathe what can only be something rude based on the body language. Our daughter happened to be walking back from the bathroom and saw it all as did I. We were shocked. We do not expect to pay 300USD for a traditional Japanese dining experience only to be insulted. Shocked. Disappointed. Angry and upset. Totally spoilt the mood of our family holiday.

We decided to enjoy a meal overlooking the Kamo River so decided to choose Takara because it had a decent outdoor floor seating are over looking Gion and their set menu looked good. The food was fresh and tasted ok, but we were offered no explanation as to what was being put in front of us, and the... final 4 courses were rushed to us within the space of 3 minutes it was as if the staff were desperate to close up shop, and clear the terrace of the tables and seat cushions. We also asked three times for the drinks menu. My wife is Japanese so the request was not lost in translation, the staff were too busy closing up shop! Will not be coming back here again.
