Our friends brought us (wife & I) here for lunch. This is a small cozy restaurant for typical Japanese Tempura. We enjoyed the meal, the atmosphere and the company of our friends.

It's been 7 to 8 years since I have reviewed this place last. These folks have maintained consistency and quality. We come here about once every 3 or 4 months and things are always very high quality. It's always the same chef. This has to account for the consistently high quality of service. W...hat I appreciate is that the set meals change depending on what is fresh. For example, today we had canola tops, long onion bottoms, and cod sperm sac (shirako) - all of which are not on the usual menu. They have shiso-wrapped shrimp, mushrooms stuffed with shrimp, and fresh jumbo shrimp tempura - all of which are worth the price of admission alone. While these folks have expanded with other locations, the original location in Ashiya is the best.

This is how tempura should be done; fresh ingredients cooked in front of you, one piece at a time. The tempura was served immediately from the frying oil, it was hot and crispy. It was DELICIOUS. I would eat there weekly if I lived in Ashiya. The chef suggested condiments to use on the differen...t pieces of tempura (macha, lemon, lime, etc).

Been to the sister store in Koshien but they are closed on Tuesdays. This place is open everyday. The food is fresh, nicely seasoned, fried right in front of you. Get to eat it with three different types of salts or dashi. Add a salad, soup and dessert and you get a great meal. There are lots... of different tempura spots but this place is consistent. Shrimp is always fresh, the eel is done right, the vegetables are all seasonal and very fresh. There is always a different Japanese local vegetables that I rarely get to try. It makes eating here a pleasure. There are three parking spots right in front of the restaurant.

Tengayu was one of the first restaurants we tried in Ashiya when we moved there in 1999 and we've been going regularly since then. This is the only tempura place we go to. We have gotten to know the sensei and vice versa. We learned to eat tempura the real way there vs just ebi tempura with dashi. ... Lunch is very reasonable with 3 courses to choose from and the basic course A is actually enough and complete. Course B offers additional tempura, the more expensive ones. C I actually have not tried. Each tempura item is served one at a time so it's very fresh and dictates the pace of your meal. You have a choice of rice or okayu (porridge) and refill as much as you want. All courses have a small salad, appetizer and miso soup. The place is a few blocks south side of the JR Ashiya Station, easy to walk. Parking for 3 cars only but there's also a public car park near the restaurant.
