This is a lovely place for traditional Japanese temple cuisine. We made a reservation and requested a vegan menu. The presentation was beautiful and the ingredients were unusual so if you’ve had shojin ryori before, you might try this for something different , seasonal and delicious. Highlights were... delicately flavored yuba and veggies in broth and an appetizer stuffed into a baked apple , served with a tiny shot glass of Sochu. We are in a private tatami room. Service was friendly and quick.

I really wanted my family to try Shojin Ryori while in Kyoto but was really disappointed. The quality of the food was good but the atmosphere of the place was throughly depressing, with badly maintained decor.

The food is as good as it is beautiful to look at. The yuba (a kind of tofu) you can prepare yourself is a lot of fun because you can make it as thick as you like and take your choice of some delightful sauces. The seating on the tatami room was a bit uncomfortable for the relative long meal. Also, ...since this is a quiet part of town, it was rather difficult to find a taxi to take us home.

I was a bit nervous about going to Ajiro as there had been few reviews of the restaurant on trip advisor. However, I am so glad that we kept our reservation. This is the ultimate temple food experience. Every course, I lost count of how many, was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. The t...aste and textures were amazing. A feast fit for kings. Thank you for an amazing experience.
