Le pique－assiette

A very small restaurant somewhat off the beaten track, with lovely food and very reasonably priced. Not the most slick service or tourist friendly set up, but very good food and an authentic wonderful experience of French food in Japan from a very good chef

We were stunned by the quality of the cooking at this French Restaurant. Every dish was delectable and we are very experienced with French food. It is a bit out of the way and not crowded which is shocking because we thought the quality was simply outstanding and will be going back on our 1 month st...ay here in Kyoto. Just delicious. We were there on an "a la carte night" (no set menu). For appetizers we had the Country pate and the terrine which was salmon, eggplant and wrapped with a type of bacon or pork belly. Boy was that beautiful and delicious. Main course was beef cheek in red wine sauce reduction with vegetables and my wife had Quenelles. For dessert we had a hojicha tea pudding (like a Japanese take on flan) and a flourless chocolate cake. WOW a perfect meal. This place should be packed. The only slight downside is that the waitress was quite inexperienced and only spoke Japanese (no French or English) however they did have one menu with English translations of the dishes so all was well. We met and spoke with the chef after the meal who is French trained. Memorable meal. All of this with one glass of wine for my wife came to 10,000 Yen (~$100).

Really great experience here. Great food, although little English spoken. We went for the 6000 Yen set menu and it was superb, plus a reasonably priced Chablis. Cant believe there were so few here, especially since it is mentioned in Michelin Guide! 1000 times better than the place we went to yester...day in Gion for the same price!
