“Worst food experience in Japan.. and maybe ever.”
To preface this, my partner and I are huge foodies who have traveled the world and eaten every kind of cuisine imaginable. Perhaps this dinner was way too far outside our realm of understanding? Honestly, though, the food is just bad, and I have no idea how this place has so many good reviews. The s...oup was the texture of slime, the scallop was like rubber and I literally couldn't bite it in half, the steak was obliterated and you couldn't taste the fish because the rice was so heavily drenched in vinegar. Eventually we had them stop bringing all the courses. We felt awful about this, but we were taking one bite and not finishing anything. Again, we love food, and all kinds of food and have fairly refined palates. We should have known this wasn't going to be up to par when we walked in, though. The lighting was too bright, the decor is drab and the menu is laminated (you should never have laminated photos of your food when the dinner costs 136,000 yen). We felt kinda robbed by the experience, and we bought a box of Ritz crackers for the walk back to our ryokan because we were starving. Maybe this is a great place for locals, but I do not recommend this for anyone who isn't well versed in this style of Japanese cooking.

“BEST FOOD EXPERIENCE IN KYOTO!!!”
The food in this restaurant is not only food it is an experience with the chef: you can choose from 2 different fix menu, 4000 yen or 5500 yen. we had a great experience and the chef illustrated us every single dish. Even a simple thing as a miso soup was unforgettable and completely different from ...others. Masterchef!

“2 1/2h spend while enjoying very god prepared food”
We enjoyed 9 plates of multiple sashimi and sushi per plate. In addition 2 soups, salad and a sweet. Sake selection was great too. Seats only about 15.

“What G-d intended sushi to be.”
Our concierge at The Screen Hotel told us about this little gem in Kyoto. One of the things that I'm realizing during this stay in Japan is that we Americans don't completely understand sushi. At a restaurant like Nijo Kizuki, it is as G-d intended it: small bites of deliciousness. The average s...ize of sushi here is about 1/2 of American sushi but it's just so much more flavorful. The cuts are better. We ordered proseco with our meal and it was perfect. One tip: if you spend less than 80 US dollars, they won't allow you to use your credit card so bring cash if you are not big eaters or if you don't drink alcohol.

“Just amazing”
The concierge at our hotel suggested we go to Kizuki, as long as we did not mind that English was not spoken. While English was limited, they had an english menu, which made things a little easier. It was just an amazing experience. Kizuki is a small restaurant with 6-8 seats at the bar and a coupl...e of table, with the chef cooking at the counter and one waitress. We had an absolutely wonderful set meal, where every dish was a surprise. My favourite was a very unique sorbet of sea urchin, just wonderful. The other thing we enjoyed is sake tasting: there are 5 sets of 3 different sake and for a modest price, you can sample different sake: very good and also a lot of fun. A huge recommendation off the beaten track.
