We walked past the menu board and decided to give the little restaurant a try after watching several nearby office workers enter. As soon as you enter the restaurant on the 2nd level (watch your head, the doorway is a bit low for those over 6 feet tall), the hostess greets you with a bow and a smil...e then leads you to your seat. The lunch menu changes seasonally and is "set" in that the choices are limited. On the day we visited, Thursday in mid-May, the choice was grilled salmon with fried chicken, or a full order of fried chicken. We were aware of this since we saw the menu outside. One person in our group had the "weekly lunch special" which included the entree (comes with salad, rice, soup and meat - 1380 yen) plus a drink and a crepe with ice cream. The others had the entrée plus drink special (1180 yen). The food was served fresh and hot. The karage (fried chicken was the best I had during this trip - thin coating, moist seasoned chicken). We shared the crepe which was prepared just like the ones we had in Paris - thin, crisp and made with lots of butter. Just check the menu beforehand to make sure the "entrees of the day" are to your liking beforehand.

“Saredo café” is good for you to have a lunch in Kyoto. It takes about 10 minutes on foot from Kyoto station. Saredo café is at second floor of the building, and you have to go up narrow and steep flight of stairs. (There is no elevator…) Its entrance is so small that you may miss to find the noti...ce. There are a few menus for lunch. All lunch menus cost 1,280yen (tax included). I went there on 30th, September. Here is menu at that time. *Karaage Lunch (Fried chicken) *Shogayaki Lunch (grilled pork) *Korroke Lunch (Fried patty made by mixing meat or vegetables with mashed potato) Every lunch menu includes rice, miso soup, drink, and dessert.

As with most restaurants in Japan, you research online, find something you like, Google map it then get to the location to find multiple restaurants all with Japanese only signs and no English names. So you pick one. We picked the wrong one but it was a good thing. Saredo looks a little unassuming ...from the outside and even from the interior. Mostly locals eating here which we took as a good sign. There was one person who spoke "English" so he helped us. They do have menus and suggestions for English speaking customers. Their meals consist of multiple little plates, some of which are served hot on a hot plate that is incorporated into your table. Very inventive takes on classic Japanese fare. The spinach sauce, Okonomiyaki was a surprisingly tasty end to a great meal. IF you can find it try it out. Good luck ;)
