祇園にしむら

Kyoto is renowned for Kaiseki dining because of restaurants like Gion Nishimura. Owner-chef Nishimura-san and his wife are hospitable hosts, genuinely dedicated to their craft. This is not a tourist trap, it's the real thing.

Gion Nishimura serves classic, super-expensive, multi-course Kaiseki dinners of the sort Kyoto is known for. Some of the courses, especially the early ones, were excellent: a tofu in sesame sauce dish was terrific. Some of the later courses were either very subtle or a little boring, depending on... your inclination.

Our family of four went to this restaurant hearing that it was extremely good. We walked down a beautiful alley and walked in, immediately we were greeted by the kindest lady. We then were shown where to sit. The restaurant was decorated well and was very beautiful. We had a set menu which was the m...ost amazing Japanese food we ever had. When we left they led us outside and recommended what to do next. They waved until we were out of sight. The experience was amazing and I would definitely recommended this restaurant.

Generally Japanese restaurants in Gion is overpriced compared with those in Kamishichiken and Pontocho. But Nishimura is pretty reasonable. Food here is well prepared and uses pretty good materials.

Superb Japanese cuisine at the highest level. Great atmosphere and all prepared in front of you. Restaurant is tucked away and hard to find but well worth it.
