Washoku Shiki is located a few minutes walk from the north exit of Karasuma-Oike. The menu is only in Japanese, but the chef, Takashi Shimazu, has two charming English speaking assistants - so that you can call this place, reserve, and manage to order. The food is fairly priced, and an Omakase is wo...rth it. From a varied and fresh Sashimi plate, through the best of Japanese cooking, Tai with crispy skin, FriedFugu, steamed crab, to the final of Saba-sushi and rich miso soup - really everything very well prepared and imaginatively served on nice porcelain. The menu chainges frequently. Washoku Shiki is not so over refined that it overwhelms. One feels welcome and comfortable. A high level place, open Sunday night!

I choose this restaurant because it has a bib gourmand meaning good quality for a good price. And oh my god, so it was! It is a tiny place, only 7 seats at a counter and a small side room for 4. Our family of 4 sat at the counter so we could see the chef prepare all of the lovely food. we had a 7 co...urse menu, mainly fish, and it was absolutely delicious. The menu is japanese only but we managed to communicate using google translate. The cook and staff were so nice and accomodating, we had a fantastic evening. We paid around 60 euro p.p. Highly recommended!!!

I was so lucky to have chosen Shiki. It is small - - only a counter with 7 seats and a table (behind a curtain) that seats 4 people. There is no English sign, so you will have to ask a taxi driver to take you there or use a map app. You can ask your hotel to print out their name in Japanese along wi...th the address, so you can take it with you. Because it is so small, reservations are mandatory The food is nothing short of spectacular. They have an extensive menu, only in Japanese. However, I’d had my hotel write the following note: “I love Japanese food and eat everything. Please bring me your favorite dishes.” The 3 people behind the counter (1 chef and 2 helpers) laughed, and motioned me to sit down. Warm people, despite the language barrier. They have a fine selection of sakes. I chose one made in Kyoto. They poured it from a huge bottle into a small glass vessel that looked like a teapot, except it had ice inside to keep the sake cold. Then the fun began. The sashimi starter was fantastic - - pristinely fresh fish, with freshly grated wasabi, and the best (and fattiest) tuna that I have ever had. They served a cooked fish dish that was similarly spectacular, a vegetable dish (I could not identify the vegetables), and a beef grilled steak that I will never forget. Not Kobe beef, but from another island also renowned for their beef. A sublime experience. I cannot recommend this restaurant more highly. It was one of the best meals I have had in the last 10 years (and I live to eat.) And the people are lovely. Heads up: this is a restaurant for foodies who want a gourmet and local experience. If you are intimidated by a place where no one speaks English, it may not be right for you.
