祇園 大渡

Just wow! People here have described this two michelin star restaurant as a hidden gem, and I cannot agree more. It's located in a small street away from the hustle and bustle, with the interiors more homely than luxurious. Chef has a larger than life personality and is happy to engage however much ...or little to his guests' preferences. He makes dining relaxed rather than stiff like most other restaurants of similar ratings. The food is simple, at times rich but overall extremely satisfying. I would come back again in a heartbeat.

I rarely write reviews about restaurant but this time it is different. I was lucky enough to hang out with one of my japanese friend that is from Kyoto. Just a head-up that restaurant has very little reviews on internet but this is a hidden gem. I've been to several 3 michelin stars, and 2 michelin ...stars. The freshness of each ingredient is to die for. (Snow Crab still moving, veggies from probably , egg that I can't even describe.)

I am not a big fan of Kaiseki-ryori but the one I had at Gion Otawari was truly enjoyable and satisfying. It is a discreet Michelin Star restaurant. We saw no boastful plaque on the wall. The owner chef created well balanced dishes with quality, seasonal ingredients. Condiments and sauces were n...ot overpowering so we could appreciate the real flavour of the food. The dinner was a set course, with twelve servings and in generous portions. Reservation well in advance is a must. The restaurant has only one counter that can seat 8-9 persons.

A small restaurant serving very fresh seafood. Prices are also affordable. Recommended that you try this place when you are in Kyoto.

If you look for Kaiseki this is the place to be in Kyoto! Being European but feeling a real Japanese here! No space for touristic request! The art of refinement, sit down and enjoy the Japanese tradition with its impetuous perfection! No needs to have a michelin star certificate!
