This is a regular spot for my family, but I think given the easy bus service from Kyoto station, it would be good for any foreign visitors. As other posters have said, tsukemono - Japanese pickles - are a famous dish in Kyoto, and Doishibazuke is one of the most famous producers here. This restauran...t is a great place to sample a variety of tsukemono in their buffet, which changes seasonally, along with set menu items like chicken and egg, grilled, salmon, or tsukemono tempura. The English on the menu is adequate and while the staff probably speak very little English, I am sure they would be more than helpful. Oh, and when you're done with your meal, save room for ice cream. Just around the corner inside from the restaurant, past the shop, there's a little stand where they sell ice cream. The flavors include shiso (perilla leaf) and yuzu. For ¥300, it's definitely a different sort of treat. It's all in Japanese, but if you ask for ice cream, I'm sure they can help you.

Great place to try a meal plus a buffet of pickles in a beautiful setting; reachable by bus from Kyoto, and a peaceful day out combined with Sanzenin or other local temples.

Upon ending our day's tour at Kyoto station, we decided to look for something local for our dinner. We noticed this restaurant having interesting short buffet line setup of few choices of pickles as appetizers and lemon jelly as dessert. As pickles are well-known in Japan, we decided to try out this... restaurant. English menu is available. The consumption of this buffet line is included in the set meal prices. We ordered set meals of steamed egg and pork chop. They carefully prepared with excellent quality. The few choices of pickles in buffet line are also tasty and refreshing. Staff are friendly and service is excellent. We later found out that this restaurant chain is reputable in Kyoto.
