“A Tourist-Friendly Casual Eatery”
The Kabuto was an izakaya (Japanese casual after-work diner-cum-bar) restaurant serving mainly robatayaki (grilled skewers) items. It is located on a busy street full of restaurants and bars in downtown Nagoya close to the main Nagoya Station. It is part of the Kobekan Group which operates 10 differ...ent brands of restaurants and bars throughout Japan. The Kabuto was different from other yakitori restaurants in that it utilized a tablet-computer menu/ordering system that offered an English and Chinese menu as well as Japanese, making it very user friendly for tourists. This izakaya consisted of three floors with mainly bar-seats on the ground floor, individual tables on the second and Japanese tatami tables on the third floor. Upon entering the restaurant one could see a beautiful display of raw food items consisting of premium beef, meat skewers of sorts, seafood and fresh vegetables. The menu was extensive, consisting of sushi & sashimi, grilled meat and seafoof, deep fried items and Japanese cooked items such as noodles and stews. The ambience was young, vibrant and international (ie. not as "Japanese Only" as other restaurants in Nagoya). As aforementioned, ordering could not be easier. Scroll and browse around on the tablet computer on the table, choose the items you fancy, click and it's ordered. Since this was an izakaya styled restaurant, one should expect things such as service, ambience and food quality to be casual, as opposed to the more up market eateries. Nevertyeless the waiters and waitresses were polite helpful and efficient. The food were tasty and freshly cooked but nothing fancy or refined. There was also a great choice of sake and beer on offer. As in all restaurants in Japan smoking was allowed and there was no designated non-smoking areas (wouldn't have made any difference anyway even if there was, with tables/seats in such close proximity) so be prepared to put up with people smoking next to you while you're eating. Good value for money at around JPY3500 (USD32) per person (drinking beer). Overall this is a good place to sample casual Japanese food in a hassle/language barrier free environment.
