“Good but not great”
Being fans of eel on rice, we went to Ungai Toku for dinner in Hakata. The restaurant is conveniently located at JR Hakata City, next to the Hakata JR station. There was no queue when we arrived, which was just a bit before 9pm. Given that this was a relatively late dinner for us, we ordered the Och...azuke (tea on Rice with Broiled Eel), Broiled Eel on rice with sauce in Lacquered Box, and a sashimi set. The Ochazuke is their specialty, where there are three steps to enjoy your eel on rice. The first is to have the original eel rice flavor. The second is to mix in the seasoning (some spring onions, sesame-like side, etc). Lastly, you should pour the special tea and have it together with the rice with broiled eel. While it was interesting to have the eel rice in different ways, the eel itself was good but not great. Perhaps my expectations were a bit high, but I found the sweet soy-sauce based sauce to be quite average, and the eel was a bit soggy. The sashimi set was quite good though, with a good variety of fish which all tasted very fresh. The staff were very polite and attentive, frequently refilling our tea. It's a decent place to eat if you are a fan of eel, but at the same time, you have lots of other options if you are in JR Hakata City, so perhaps it's worth exploring what your alternative choices are.

“Broiled eel”
Toku is a restaurant of Unagi (broiled eel) speciality. It is conveniently located in Amu Plaza, in JR Hakata station. Unlike many other restaurants in Amu Plaza, this restaurant is not much crowded. But the price of food is relatively high. (About $30 for dinner)

“Unagi Toku Hakata @ Amu Plaza”
This well-known Unagi restaurant has a few branches around Japan. This one is conveniently located on 9/F Amu Plaza Hakata. Quality is not outstanding, but worth trying you if like eel and when there is no queue for dining there. Recommendation: Unagi Chazuke for 3420 yen ( with addition of shallot..., wasabi and special home made tea onto rice) and Unajyu (with choice of 3 portion size) English menu available

“For unagi lovers: try the unagi chazuke”
The restaurant was not crowded at lunch probably because it was not summer - unagi feasting season. But we were craving for unagi so just as well. Service was nice and polite, and one of the waitresses explained that the restaurant originated from Shizuoka. They were famous for unagi in chazuke s...o we had to try it. We first ate the unagi with rice as is, then with some sansho, scallions and wasabi, and finally as chazuke. The latter turned out to be surprisingly good. Perhaps the freshly ground wasabi and chazuke helped reduce some of the cloyiness we sometimes feel from eating unagi. The dessert of yuzu sorbet provided a refreshing end to a nice meal.
