Dining at BERNARD in Kanazawa is not simply a meal—it’s a deeply personal and intimate culinary experience. This Michelin one-star restaurant is helmed by Chef Bernard, who crafts an exquisite tasting menu from seasonal Japanese ingredients with French technique and precision. The evening unfolds li...ke a private performance, with each course revealing new layers of flavor and artistry. On the night we dined, it was just our party of five—making the experience feel even more special and exclusive. Bernard’s wife welcomed us with warmth and grace, managing the front of house with calm elegance and making us feel entirely at home. Every dish on the menu was thoughtfully composed, but my personal highlight was the oven-baked pufferfish milt, served with squid and black truffle, accompanied by an apple and celery root salad and squid ink sauce. The combination was luxurious and deeply flavorful—a standout among many beautifully executed courses. The dessert was another highlight—featuring marinated strawberries, mulberry leaf wine jelly, raspberry ice cream with meringue, and coconut cream. Delicate yet satisfying, it was the perfect ending to an extraordinary meal. Dining at Bernard is a rare and unforgettable experience—private, precise, and filled with soul. A hidden gem in Kanazawa not to be missed.

“Value French Japanese cuisine”

This is our first time trying the above restaurant. Overall very good food quality with simple presentation. Little English spoken and set menu is written in English. The course has about 10 items and of good portion. You will not be hungry. Husband n wife team in a residential area near omicho m...arket. The chef prefers a low profile and does not encourage photo taking of his dishes. The standard course menu for dinner is 15,000y before taxes. Chef is a very approachable person and comes out personally to deliver as well as explain the dish. The dishes are a good mixture of seafood n meat with lots of local wild vegetables that is in season. Highly recommended.

This is a small French restaurant with Japanese style and only 12 covers. Only four dining on the Tuesday evening in late September when we visited. Chef Takayuki Ushiyama trained in France and returned to his home town to open his own restaurant. His wife runs 'front of house', but he is also very ...hands on discussing the menu with guests. We had a very good value set price menu of several courses, which was excellent. We were given a choice of meat for the entrée and then chef prepares the full menu around that choice. Chef and his wife were delightful to talk to, but the conversation was largely in French as only he spoke limited English. The framed Michelin star certificate recently awarded takes pride of place and is richly deserved. It is hard to find and your taxi driver may not know the location so do have the address in Japanese to hand.

“Surprise: Great French Food in Kanazawa”

Even though on a weekday night I was only one of two diners, if you like French food, this is a must. The young chef trained in Beaune France, and is masterful in his skill and presentation. A thoroughly delicious and elegant meal, and I enjoyed talking French with Bernard.

We were treated this evening to some creative and fun cooking . It was a set menu with three options for the entree . Cooked and served up by a delightful young couple who were bursting with enthusiasm . The wine list is in Japanese and its helpful if you speak French , otherwise its down to them t...o offer French burgundy or Bordeaux wines ; which were fine . Coming back to the food it was beautifully cooked and if you are after classic French cuisine then I doubt if you'll be disappointed . Congratulations to Takayuki Ushiyama and his wife for such good cooking and good luck for the future .
