“Food on a train - so much fun and good variety”
We’ve all seen or sometimes been to a Japanese restaurant with the sushi train transporting delicious treats around the room. Kura is similar except it’s not a train, it’s a continual conveyor belt around the quite large restaurant that you simply grab and put on the table. Although, I’ll give you a... tip – read the instructions on how to remove the plate from under the little cover. The staff were lovely as we entered, and clearly not speaking Japanese wasn’t an issue. We were shown to a booth, of which there are plenty and easily seat 4 if not 6. There are menus in English if needed but really, it’s not that hard to navigate your way around the menus or what’s being transported in front of your eyes. You can wait for the ‘food train’ to come around with various servings or you can order from a digital visual menu. This also keeps a tally of what you’ve ordered. Once you’ve selected what you want and hit ORDER, it takes only a few minutes for that item to be delivered on another conveyer belt above the '‘food train’ and arrive at your booth. Very clever. The cute little sounds as your order arrives also is a nice touch. Most serves are around 100Yen so if you’re on a budget you’ll find in worthwhile. There were so many choices but as I’m not that big on seafood, I was somewhat limited. However, my companions certainly lived it up with a vast array of tempura, salmon, eel, mackerel and much more. I had popcorn chicken and omelette plus a few other nice treats. At the end of the meal, you pop your dirty dishes in a little chute which digitally calculates your order and makes for a smooth checkout when you’re ready to pay. Kura make an effort to serve more traditional style food with the added bonus of not using the four major food additives (chemical seasonings, artificial sweeteners, artificial colourings, artificial preservatives) which is not only progressive by Japanese standards but much appreciated by diners. For those that don’t have the time to eat in, there is also a takeaway service which was doing a good trade when we were there. Notes: Very kid friendly. Wheelchair accessible. Disabled friendly. Good parking out the front.
