“Namahage Experience in Akita and Good Food to go with it”
This is a typical Akita restaurant serving local food known for their kiritanbo hot pot. The restaurant is a short walk from the Akita Station and very easy to locate for the 2 huge Namahage masks on the sides on the building. To get in, don't try to open the door. You need to find an opening on th...e front and literally bow down to let yourself in. For foreigners the next hurdle is to order. Very little English is spoken and no English menu. But you cannot go wrong by asking the staff for recommendations. Their fish are fresh caught on the day itself and the hot pots are good. Also don't forget to try the local sake. When we were about to leave, the staff told us to stay for the Namahage appearance. The deity appeared and went round to every guest table to tell them to behave themselves. The Namahage appear between 7.30 to 8.30 each night. It was a good local experience and I would recommend coming here for dinner as the food is value fir money.

“Dining with a Demon!”
5 minute to walk from the Akita Station. Unique entrance. Tatami seating. ONI/ogre visitation was personable. Menu has pictures one can point to order from. Complimentary pork soup appetizer and crackers given. Great staff.

“Burnt down!”
Went searching for this place on a cold wet night...nothing...found out the next day that it had burnt down 3 months ago. Found a place only one block away which was very similar...maybe called Akita Dining...had a snow cave at the entrance and I think maybe it was replacing the one we were looking ...for. Either way it was so good we went back twice, not much english spoken but we managed thanks to the helpful staff..lively atmosphere great food. The cover charge gave you a beautiful little stew to start the meal...fantastic.

“Great atmosphere - met with a Namahage”
A great place for dinner. Beautifully decorated. Nice local sake and good local food. We even met with the Namahage "in residence", the scary ogre from Akita who went from table to table to greet the guests. There was not much English spoken and no English menu, but we somehow got along and ordered ...a broth with Kiritanpo (pounded rice on sticks, a local speciality) As we arrived for dinner on Christmas day we were even gifted two wooden sake cups. All in all, a happy experience.
