My colleague suggested that we visit Chinatown while in Kobe since there is a large vibrant chinese community in the area. We arrived at 8pm Tuesday night last week a short walk from Sonomiya station and the streets were practically empty. Most of the restaurants were also empty so we wandered thru... a few side streets. My husband stopped a man to ask if we were in Chinatown and this man's wife stepped in to answer. They seemed to be looking for a restaurant too and saw them take an elevator. We decided not to stalk them, and walked off again, but we didnt like the choices so we decided to take the elevator and try our lack with their choice. This was a chinese restaurant on second floor, later we found the front entrance from the street where there were lions at bottom of stairs. The restaurant was old and full of large tables with wooden chairs. Nothing fancy. We saw the couple with their son sitting at another table and bowed our heads They had an english menu and we decided to order the standards we know of from NY Chinatown. Spring roll, Sweet and sour pork and Seafood fried noodle. Well, my husband was delighted with the meal and I have to say he is picky. Portions are smaller than in NYC but enough for two. The sweet and sour pork tasted the Cantonese traditional style, tasty, good portion of meat w/ bell pepper. The seafood noodle was very tasty and had good variety of seafood. Unfortunately, the spring roll was soggy, oily and not well filled. However, overall the experience was authentic enough for us and we needed a dose of chinese food on this trip. I am sure there are other options in Kobe Chinatown but I think we found a winner. We hope to try the street level shops at the next street.
