“Amazing staff, great food”
We had a wonderful evening meal at Izakaya Kan. The food was great, with lots of local specialities including horse meat (we did not try it) and mustard stuffed lotus root (amazing - especially with a good beer). The fried chicken with yuzu sauce was also really memorable. Unfortunately they were ou...t of what must have been the world's most expensive onion rings (research leads me to believe a very famous onion is grown nearby). What was even more memorable was the welcome of the staff, all spoke a little English (and there was an English menu) and all took the time to chat to us and make jokes whilst we were sat at the counter. We were made to feel really welcome and it ended up being a really special evening.

“What a fantastic little place, also perfect for single travelers!”
When in Kumamoto must try horse meat right? But I didn't want to go to the big name restaurants that are packed with tourists, so I walked around and luckily stumbled across this place in an alley just off the big roofed shopping arcade. I could see people sitting at the bar from the window outside,... and the menu contained horse, so I went in, turned out to me the best decision ever! The food was amazing, waiter spoke some English and they had English menu with pictures, and they even had a menu for single person portions! To boot, they have an enormous selection of locally produced shochu and sake, so I could try many different things. Amazing experience, I sat here for so long not wanting to leave. Highly recommended!
