“NOTHING RITZY JUST GOOD TRADITIONAL FOOD AND COOKING.”
Repeat visit to Tokyo. Found this gem while getting lost in the Wing complex close to our hotel and opposite Shinagawa station. Got the last table straight away, It’s popular. English menu with lots of ‘sets’, easy to order, (I can also point in English and Japanese), helpful staff albeit with limit...ed English. Translation app for the difficult bits laughingly shared. Food was excellent (especially the shrimp cakes) and well priced - bottle of wine to accompany also good. Service was fine, the meal was being cooked to order which was appreciated - no bainmarie here - enjoyed the ambiance and some camaraderie with fellow diners while waiting. Everyone seemed happy to be there. Appeared to be a favourite with locals and a few tourists like us, always a good sign. Nothing ritzy, just good traditional food and cooking. Went back again and then on our last night in Tokyo for repeat experiences - just as good. Don’t understand the negative comments but everyone has different expectations. Our were certainly met! Recommended!

“Highly recommended”
A fantastic place to sample tempura. Lovely atmosphere and served by chefs at the fryer. Very good food and the prices so reasonable. Squid, shrimp, vegetables, miso. This place felt untouched by a lot of the buildings and funfair activities that surround it. A perfect place for a solo diner (as we...ll as couples, small groups). Highly recommended.

“Not worth it at all!”
Totally agree with the last reviewer, this place, you should avoid it at all costs. Very overpriced, bad attitudes, small portions, low quality; everything that you can think of towards tourists. They ruined the history behind the restaurant. No wonder it was so easy to get a table. The restaura...nt was so hot inside and they were doing deep frying inside the small premise. There were times that we could not breathe well and the many halogen lights on the ceiling almost made us give up the meals before finishing them. The glasses they gave you were for kids not for adults and you had to wave them down for water refills. How can you go wrong with tempura in the country that is supposed to be good at that? But yes, they can. We could taste flour more than the real food. Food pieces were not fresh and there were tiny. They gave each of us half a bowl of rice; its just insulting as they thought we were rookies in Japan. When the guy came over explaining the different sources to us, there was a moment that we thought we were really dumb. To us, they were pretty straightforward. The guy was rude who seemed to show dislike to tourists. You don't have to settle with them. Go across the street, go inside the subway station and you will see tons of restaurants there.

“Good place”
I have known the Tsunahachi tempura chain from previous visits and this time I ventured into the one at Takanawa in the Wing area besieged with eating choices. This place manages to hold its own amidst the competition We had the tempura set. It had several tempura pieces including shrimps, egg plant,... cucumber, eel and sweet potato It was served with a sauce in which you put in the white grated radish. Tempura's are big enough to be eaten with a fork and knife too. we liked the shrimps so ordered an extra dish of just shrimp tempura and got 5 succulent crisp pieces which we had with our bottle of warm sake drunk in small cups A satisfying place
