Well done and tasty typical Japanese dishes and teriyaki, but very expensive in regard to the small portions.

“Dinner-underwhelming”

We were excited to try a yakitori restaurant and chose Imaiya in Shinjukj because our hotel (a 5 star) recommended it. Our issue is less with the food and more with the fact that we felt somewhat taken advantage of because we don't speak the local language. When seated, we were brought an amuse bu...che. Twice, we asked what it was, and were told it is a traditional Japanese something (we couldn't quite catch the last word, but we will get back to that later). We ordered the chicken thigh, chicken breast, asparagus and mushroom yakitori. The asparagus was tasty, and the mushroom was ok. But it was one mushroom. A single one, for 420 yen (plus tax). Hm. The chicken thigh -- pricier than filet mignon -- was quite fatty and not great in flavor. We left some of it behind. The chicken breast was tasty and moist, but not the best chicken I've ever had or anything, and definitely not worth 2300 yen, whether in size or quality. When the bill came, there was a surprise 1440 yen charge. We did the math, and found that even with this charge, the bill was too high. We asked, and were told there was a table/cover charge for the amuse. Well, that's something that would have been nice to know up front, perhaps when we asked two times (!) what the amuse was. Although we didn't understand fully the response, it certainly was not "table charge/cover." We also were told there is an 8% tax, which we haven't encountered in our other 2 meals in Tokyo. We paid and left, but certainly wondered if the "table charge" was a foreigner-only special. Even if the bill were clear, the food was just so-so--perhaps 2.5 to 3'stars instead of the 2 I'm leaving overall. Next time we want yakitori, we will try Memory lane. And we probably will tell our hotel so they don't continue to recommend this place. A rather disappointing dinner.

“Average food, nothing fancy ”

Had high expectations after reading the reviews. Chicken was average for the price. Some parts were salty. The only good thing was the crisp chicken skin. After seeing KFC at the corner, I wonder if I made the right choice.
