“Unbelievable for Tokyo!”

I am in such a state of shock! After six years of living in Tokyo, I can finally say I had a bad meal. It was the worst dinner I've had in Japan. I often walk by this restaurant and think it looks fun. It is a cute place and looks lively, however, don't be fooled. The food tastes horrible. On ...top of the taste, the service was not that good. They were out of most of their menu items. The beef was tough and lacked flavor. The chicken and bonito tasted like the smoked grass. I can't imagine craving that smokey taste. It was not a good smoked flavor. The taste was simply wrong. The best thing about the meal was the sake and the prices were not that bad.

“Eat the Bonito”

Stumbled across this restaurant and so pleased we did. If you sit at the bar you can watch the cooks prepare your meals which in some instances involves burning hay to impart a smoky flavour to the dish. This was the case for the wagyu beef we had which melted in the mouth, but the star dish was t...he lightly seared bonito. Lightly seared and with a smoky flavour these rare nuggets were just so delicious. None of the other dishes we had disappointed and the service was prompt and efficient. Sadly we found this restaurant on our last night as we would have gone back for sure. Price wise its probably mid range, but well worth it.

“Super easy izakaya”

For an English speaker, this place has a lot to like: English language picture menus for drinks and food; quick service; informal atmosphere so you don’t have to fuss about shoes, etc.(except for the super-popular Japanese style street-side tables). Quibble: a few good dishes are not on the English... menu. The couple at the table next to ours was raving over fried smelts or sardines. But - pick up the Japanese menu (on the table), and there they are. All you have to do is point. We did not care at all for the signature dishes of various proteins smoked over straw. We had two, the bonito sashimi (a HUGE portion), and dark-meat chicken. To us, they are way too smoky. It’s not barbecue smoky - rather, stick something over a fireplace fire for a minute smoky. If you like that - you’ll like the featured dishes. That said, the sea vegetable tempura and pickled vegetables were delicious. The “seared” (i.e. scored) cucumbers with sweet miso dip were also good. Would we go again? No. But it was just fine
