“Nice Shabu-shabu, sneaky pricing”

2
Reviewed 09/Jun/2025

We dined at this restaurant on a Monday night, and the place felt quiet, with only two other tables occupied besides ours. Our hotel had made the reservation for us, and an English menu was already placed on our table upon arrival. However, we noticed the prices on the English menu included unusual...ly high taxes and service charges. Curious, we requested a Japanese menu and discovered that prices for items beyond the first page were indeed higher on the English version. This felt deceptive. When we asked about the discrepancy, the staff seemed embarrassed but offered no explanation. We ordered shabu-shabu and a “large” beer. The shabu-shabu featured good-quality meat, though the other ingredients were average. The beer arrived in a surprisingly small glass. We hadn’t done the math to realize their “large” size at 300 ml was smaller than a standard can, which was disappointing. The service was attentive but inexperienced. Our waitress, dressed in a traditional outfit with wide sleeves, accidentally brushed her sleeves across our plates multiple times while serving. Overall, the shabu-shabu meal was enjoyable but unremarkable. The prices were higher than at similar restaurants, though the location was convenient to our hotel. The sneaky pricing on the English menu left a negative impression.

“Great Dinner Spot for Meat Eaters”

If you like traditional Japanese Shabu Shabu, this is a great place. We were a large group, and had a private room. The food and service was wonderful. Great for a family or large group. It is pretty expensive. The menu is online, and there isn't anything really for a non-meat eater. The resta...urant is on the 4th floor of the building with several floors all different types of restaurants. Nice area to walk around, quiet and right near Mitsukoshi Department Store.

We have just been at Zakuro’s for a Shabi Shabu dinner and very much enjoyed the evening. Service was very friendly and food was very good. Recommended.

“Early lunch recommended”

We had a wonderfully tasty sukiyaki - thinly sliced beef with tofu, mushrooms, konnyaku and vegetables cooked in a hotpot with (optional) raw egg to stir in at the last minute. (Raw eggs in Japan are very safe and fresh to eat BTW). We ordered additional appetisers of deep fried fish and grilled squ...id. Everything was beautifully cooked and had a rich flavour. Together with miso soup, pickles, rice and a delicate dressed tomato salad this was around 8000 yen, so fairly expensive but good value for the quality. English menus are available and the staff were very welcoming. I would recommend you arrive before 11:45am before the office lunch rush, otherwise tables will be scarce.

“Focus on the Shabu Shabu”

The menu is not extensive but this is a place for shabu-shabu and sukiyaki. The restaurant has light-coloured decor and is pleasant and cosy. We kept ordering extra meat and small side dishes. Shabu-shabu is winter cuisine and the place is therefore packed with both business and leisure guests. ...The location is charming though it is on a main street. Nihonbashi is an upmarket business area and the restaurants in this complex certainly know whom they are serving. Order Grade 5 beef, it is worth the price. However, the service suffered as they were so obviously under-staffed. Staff members were polite and tried their best to be efficient, but drinks took a while to arrive and so did our extra dishes. It is worth the time if you enjoy Japanese beef and very fresh vegetables. A small bottle of hot sake completes the evening. An enjoyable small establishment, charming if you enjoy cooking for yourself at your own table.
