Hachimaki

This place has a relaxed and informal atmosphere with superb tempura and a concise menu. Service is fast and friendly and the food is of a very good standard. If you've never had tempura before this would be a perfect place to start. They specialise in ten don (shrimp, squid, vegetables tempura with... a savoury dipping sauce plus rice and miso soup). What I particularly like is that they carve their own ginger here into nice thick, crunchy strips with a light pickling (not the usual out of a bottle stuff). I was amazed at how cheap it was. You can get an excellent lunch here for just ¥1000. Don't worry if there is a small line outside - it moves fast and it's definitely worth the wait!

Hachimaki is a traditional establishment specializes in tempura and ten-don (tempura rice bowl) that started their business in 1931. I arrived before noon and had to wait about 10 mins to get seated at the bar. You can tell the place has history from the interior although it's clean and well-maintai...ned. The signature ten-don costs 1000 yen and comes with 2 tempura shrimps, veggies, a piece of fish, and squid. The chef would glaze the tempura with a special sauce that was flavorful but not overwhelming. Very tasty and fulfilling for the price.
