“An unpretentious, solid little sushi bar in Tokyo”

Reviewed 08/Mar/2018

Midori-zushi is a small, neighborhood sushi restaurant, with its traditional bar and two tables allowing eight people to sit. It is operated by the sushi chef, behind the counter, and his aide who brings the drinks and the dishes to the tables. Do not draw any hasty conclusion from the stern look of... the chef. The master is at work, and his creations are worth the visit. We went for omakase (お任せ), letting the chef decide for us, and we did not regret it. We were first served a sashimi (さしみ) composition, elegantly decorated, with tuna (マグロ), squid (いか) and mackerel (サバ). The real pièce de résistance, in my humble opinion, was the sea scallop (ホタテ). An unbelievably large slice seared to perfection and served with a piece of nori (のり), prefacing the traditional rectangular plate of nigiris (握り寿司) and makis (巻き寿司). Sweet omelet (卵), salmon roe (イクラ), raw shrimp (エビ), red tuna (マグロ), yellowtail (ハマチ), fat tuna (トロ), and, of course, eel (ウナギ). Midori-zushi may not the best sushi bar in Tokyo, but it is a good, authentic restaurant, worth paying a visit if you happen to be in that area of the capital. No pretense here; just sushis in a cozy, homey atmosphere.
