We went on the recommendation of a friend. Had a little difficulty finding it as we do not speak Japanese. The menu is also in Japanese but we were capably looked after by Amy, one of the very pleasant and helpful staff who explained everything to us in English The food was tasty, plentiful and fr...esh, served in a cozy traditional Japanese setting.

This place was recommended by a local and didn't disappoint. The atmosphere is very 'traditional' (most dining area are private rooms w tatani mats) but all of the staff are friendly and welcoming. Most do NOT speak English but they made a point of having one of the staff who does (from Singapor...e) translate for us and make sure we were taken care of. Menu consists of 'set' course options, and we opted for one of the larger at 1,800 JY/person. They have cheaper options in the 7,000 JY range but this gave us an array of sashimi (shellfish oriented) both king crab and hairy-crab as well as local potato dish, crab porridge and desert, drinks (soft) included. Crab was the highlight and they completely de-shelled the hairy crab for us (optional at no charge). Not hard to find - just follow Google maps and it's the only place on 2nd flr of building.

“Traditional Japanese crab cuisine”

We just had our best meal at Sapporo. Seafood was fresh and service was even better. They had a live squid in a bag with air swimming in front of their door. They are located on the second floor, and it is not easy to find if you don't read Japanese. The menu itself is also in Japanese, and only one... server understood English. However, the experience is great, because of their warm hospitality. The whole restaurant greets you going in and out. All the tables are in small tatami rooms, and it makes you feel like you are eating in a Japanese home. This place is pretty busy, and I think we are the only foreigners at the restaurant. Restaurant has been around for a very long time and dress code is casual. We had 2 set dinners which consisted a sashimi platter (clam, squid, fish, uni, conch, octopus, sweet shrimps and more), steam hairy crab, crab sashimi, fried crab dumplings, grilled fish, grilled abolone and a crab porridge. There was a few side dishes between the meal. The entire course took more than two hours to finish, because there was more food than we can eat. It costed 15,000 yen which is roughly $150 per person, and it is totally worth it.

Kani tei is an excellent traditional crab restaurant in Susukino. It has good ratings on Japanese gourmet websites but not yet here though it deserves it! The chefs and owners were extremely caring and friendly. Note that you get a free drink if you booked through a website. Food was absolutely am...azing. We got the cheaper set at 5000Yen. I could not believe the freshness! We had a notably a whole hairy crab.. Succulent. Same for all the dishes, especially seafood of course. Thank you again! I am fluent in Japanese and I am not sure whether their waiters speak English, but anyway what you have to do is really just chose a set based on its price and how much you want to eat. It is traditional Japanese rooms with some privacy. The building itself is not very engaging, but this is real Japan.

“Think twice if you don't know Japanese!”

I went there with my parents (at 70+). We don't know Japanese. We went there just because of the comments on the web. We arrived at 5:00pm, the time when the restaurant opens. We were warmly welcomed by a woman (the owner I guessed). She showed us only ONE menu which cost 8,000 yen per person.... If I understood correctly, she said we MUST order 3 sets. I had a very difficult time to communicate with her in English because her English was so limited. The set includes a lot of dishes. Sashimi, 3 kinds of crabs, fried fish, vegie, crab congee, ..... ice-cream. We were so full!!! I think crab-lovers would love this place very much as I believe we can't have the same thing in my own country with this price! However, as we 3 are not crab-lovers and we just wanted to try the crabs in Sapporo, I think this single menu is NO good. I mean we should have given more choices. It's like, you guys are in here, order it or go. My mum is a good cook. She said that some crabs were frozen. Some were fresh, though. I do wonder if local Japanese would be offered more choices. I just don't believe that this restaurant offers only one set. Good service, though. Polite staff. Don't expect to have choices if you don't know Japanese!
