“Great place to try Kobe beef”
We booked a reservation here because we knew it was very popular. We wanted to come for lunch. Kobe beef is VERY expensive but we wanted to try it. This restaurant was founded in 1885 is well known as one of the best beef restaurants in Kobe. The restaurant, with its modern and European-inspired dec...or, has limited place settings, so it is strongly recommended to book ahead on their website. If you sit at the bar, the chef will give you an explanation of the process as he prepares the meat on a teppanyaki surface in front of you. We really enjoyed this restaurant.

On recommendation of our concierge’s we went there. Very good Teppan-Yaki. Meat quality is excellent. Service very friendly and welcoming. Different than all the Teppan-Yaki I’ve visited until now was the style they served the meat. They serve it in several smaller portions and other dishes in betwe...en. Very comfortable. Highly recommendable place

“I wish I could give a better review”
The steak was cooked to perfection but that was about it. We felt like intruders, I booked months in advance only to be sat in the corner and made to feel like we were just an annoyance that must be dealt with. This meal cost nearly $700 - an amount I was more than willing to part with for the e...xperience of seeing a great chef cook an amazing piece of steak and getting the opportunity to taste the result. What we got was lackluster service, very ordinary set menu and some steak sent over to our table with very little explanation. We had a nice soup, what looked like a supermarket salad, two superior cuts of Kobe beef and off-cuts mixed with sprouts. The off-cuts mixed with sprouts were so cold and oily that we couldn't even finish them. This was meant to be a highlight of our trip and it was, by far, the biggest disappointment. I hate writing this review, but it cost too much to ignore the fact that this felt like a rip off - we were in and out of this restaurant in under 45 minutes. Maybe you need to be a native Japanese speaker to get the best experience, but they advertise in English so I think it fair to assume they are marketing to English speakers. I had so many fantastic restaurant experiences in Japan - it is just so disappointing that the most expensive one wasn't one of them.

“Original restaurant in Kobe beef restaurant chain, recommended by mutliple concierges, expensive but good”
Mouriya is a well-known chain of restaurants specializing in Kobe beef. I stayed at a couple of hotels in Kobe previously and they all recommended Mouriya for Kobe beef. I went to the original restaurant in the chain with friends. Some of the newer Mouriya restaurants have fancier settings for bu...siness dinners, and others are more casual and designed for families with children. We went to the original which has a fairly small floor space on each of its 3 floors with a few tables for 2 or 4 people on one side and a counter with around 8 or 10 seats on the other side. We opted for counter seatiing so we could watch our chef prepare our Kobe beef meal right in front of us on the teppanyaki grilling surface. We opted for the basic set with an appetizer and then our choice of cut of Kobe beef grilled with vegetables. We decided to try three different cuts and share them - fillet, sirloin and ribeye (in increasing order of marbling and fat). Our chef meticulously cut off the pieces of excess fat from the meat, grilled them until they were crisp and used them to cook and top the bean sprouts - delicious. The Kobe beef of course was very tender with all the marbled fat melting beautifully in your mouth. Eventhough the size of the Kobe beef serving did not appear very large, we thought the meal was very filling perhaps because of the high fat content. Service was good and of course it was fun to watch the teppanyaki chef cooking right in front of our eyes. Price is expensive since Kobe beef is expensive. A luxurious indulgence, but then again in Kobe one has to have Kobe beef!
